I was listening to some Quicksilver Messenger Service the other day and thought of this picture. One of the first photojournalistic images I ever took. It was taken at Music Festival at Pitt Stadium in 1973 called the One World Festival of Music. Quicksilver was sitting in the stands listening to Billy Preston when I grabbed this picture of Dino Valenti stealing a kiss. Caught in the Act
Before visiting Holland I had seen a few Castles in France and Belgium but was always disappointed that they didn’t have moats. Any movie I ever saw that had a castle had a moat. I don’t know if this qualifies as a Castle. In Holland Castles and Palaces are called Slot. This is Slot Zuylen outside of Utrecht and it does have a moat! It is worth it to go to The Netherlands if the only thing you do is visit the Keukenhof. The park is 32 hectares wide and has 15 kilometres of footpaths so you can’t see it all in a day. There are wonderful Inns and hotels nearby if you wish to extend your stay. If you like Tulips go in the early spring but each season offers amazing garden views and activities for young and old. April at the Keukenhof
This week I have been posting images from Holland. Hinda and I visited Amsterdam in April 2001 and we both can’t wait to go back. Next time we will go in May when it is a little warmer and the tulips are in bloom. This is a view of one of the many canals. While having lunch in Lahaina we saw this shipwreck in the harbor. I couldn’t help but wonder how long it had been there, probably since the last major storm. However as I took this picture I couldn’t help but think back to Lahaina’s history when the old sea town was frequented by Whalers and Pirates instead of tourists. Lahaina Ship Wreck
I was very unimpressed with Honolulu and Waikiki Beach. Maybe it is because I visited Kauai and Maui many times before ever spending any time on Oahu except for the airport. Maybe it was because I thought Miami had better beaches. Maybe it was because Honolulu reminded me of Miami. Maybe it was because of all the street hustlers and the crowded beaches. In any case the one thing I did like was Diamond Head. It was a great place to hike and quiet and serene compared to noisy Waikiki beach. Diamond Head
Whenever we travel on vacation we miss our dog so we tend to glom on to other peoples dogs. These two were playing on the beach at Kaanapali beach in Maui near a Maui Family Sunday Picnic. On a recent trip to Mars I observed these cloud formations leading me to the conclusion that life is possible! Oh, wait a minute it wasn’t Mars it WAS Maui. This is a morning view from the crater at Haleakala National Park in Maui. The park is 10,000 above sea level and quite a miraculous ride to the top. It can be very cold so make sure you bring a warm jacket or coat. The astronauts trained here before the moon mission because NASA thought the terrain was the most similar one in the USA to the surface of the moon. The views are spectacular. The Crater at Haleakala
We first came across this spot while driving to Honukua bay to snorkel with the giant Honu or sea turtles. There were literally hundreds of these rock stacks looking over the Pacific ocean. We convinced ourselves that it must be some sort of old Hawaiian religious ritual. We also noticed them on Haleakala and other places on the island. I did some research and they have nothing to do with Hawaii. Apparently people do this all over the world and since then I have noticed them in other places at well. This just proves that all people are creative and the human mind provides endless ways for us to exhibit our creativity. You can see more images from Maui at my commercial gallery by clicking here.
Rock Stacking on Maui
One of the advantages of staying at Ka’anapali Beach in Maui is that each day you are treated to a beautiful Sunset. Sure very rarely it may rain but one of the most difficult decisions of the day is where to view the setting sun. In summer I like to be dinning on the beach at The Barefoot Bar or Pacifico and see the setting sun as we enjoy cocktails before dinner.
