The Bad Plus at August Wilson Center Poll

Last week I published some images of The Bad Plus performing in Pittsburgh at The August Wilson Center.

The images caused some Facebook discussion of if they should be in monochrome or color. I can”t decide so here are some images of Orrin Evans on Piano and Reid Anderson on Bass in color and monochrome. Help me decide by answering this poll.

The Bad Plus at The August Wilson Center

About ten years ago my daughter gave me a CD of The Bad Plus for my birthday. I loved their complex improvisational rhythmic music. Some of the best new jazz I had heard in a while. Over the years there have been a couple of changes in the group. Although the founding member Ethan Iverson has left the group founding member bassist Reid Anderson and drummer Dave King, have added Orrin Evans on piano. The results are still amazing music.

These images are from last night at The August Wilson Center in Pittsburgh.

How Do You Celebrate Martin Luther King Day?

Today is a different sort of holiday. It is of course a celebration of the life and work of Martin Luther King Jr but it is hard to celebrate his life without feeling sorrow for the way his life ended. Visiting the National Civil Rights Museum this year was eye opening for me. Even though I have been alive for a lot of the civil rights movement it was an emotional visit.

So if you can’t get there in person, you can spend a few minutes of their web site learning something new and maybe planning for a future visit. Enjoy your day off but spend a moment or two acknowledging the life of a great American.

Mexican Dancer Revisited

This time of year I like to revisit old images and sometimes edit them with newer tools. This group of performers were outside the archaeological ruins in Tulum Mexico. They were trying to solicit people to have their picture taken with a huge snake. I found them to be colorful performers.

The problem with the original image is that it was taken quickly and the focus seemed soft. To correct this I edited it with the edge tool and HDR tool form NIK. The result is an acceptable candid image although not worthy of my commercial site.

The Old Oyster House Revisited

This time of year I like to revisit old images and sometimes edit them with newer tools. This is one of the first images I ever took with a cell phone. When I returned to Pittsburgh five years ago one of the first places I visited was Market Square which had changed dramatically in my 35 year absence. One thing that seemed unchanged was The Original Oyster House.

I took this image while sitting at the bar. It was in color but thought it should really be a monochrome image so I edited it with the NIK Silver Imaging tool.

Window Fashion in Milano

I am in the process of searching old images for post production. When I do this I frequently find images that I never shared or really studied at all. I never shared it because I found the window reflections annoying. Maybe they are but when I saw it I laughed out loud so the image works on some level.

This window was on a street in central Milan Italy not far from the Central Park.

How to Identify Winter in Pittsburgh

In recent years it’s hard to know when it is actually winter in Pittsburgh. We have had 60 degree days in January and 20 degree days in November. Fortunately we have a fool proof system. If Dino has his scarf on, it’s cold enough to be winter!

Independence Day

Kristallnacht

Americans have some dates burned in their memory. September 11 and December 7 are two notorious dates where Americans were attacked, killed and suffered extreme hardships. It is important as Americans to remember these dates and honor the fallen. However, as citizens of the world we MUST remember today as well because it is the 76th anniversary of Kristallnacht.

Tonight were the first attacks on Jewish homes in Germany. At least 91 Jews were killed in the attacks, and a further 30,000 arrested and incarcerated in concentration camps. Jewish homes, hospitals, and schools were ransacked, over 1,000 synagogues were burned and Jewish businesses destroyed or damaged. Millions of others experienced death and torture by the lunatic Hitler. We must never forget and always honor this day. Things are much better in Europe now for Jewish people that have remained or returned over all these years. However, recently when visiting Italy I saw it was still necessary for soldiers to guard the synagogue in Milan and heavy fences kept out even curious tourists like myself.

Halloween at The Phipps

Pittsburgh is a special Halloween town. Halloween was always special here but after the Night of The Living Dead it all changed. The Phipps conservatory has made Halloween a big part of their Fall Flower Show. We enjoyed it last week and wanted to share some images from the show.
