L’ Shana Tova

Tonight is the beginning of one of the most sacred holidays in Judaism: Rosh Hashanah. I can’t help but wonder what services would look like in the beautiful Portuguese Synagogue in Amsterdam.

Amsterdam is known for its Red Light District, Canals, Coffee Shops and Museums. Nestled in this backdrop is one of the great Synagogues of the world. It was built by Spanish Jews escaping the Spanish Inquisition. Since Holland and Spain were at war with one another, those escaping persecution said they were Portuguese to gain entry in to the country. Many Synagogues in Europe today restrict access due to persistent anti-Semitic feelings. However the Portuguese Synagogue is open for visitors for a small fee. You can also attend services on Friday or Saturday without paying a fee. The entire Synagogue is lit by candles and there is an excellent Judaica store where you can buy beautiful souvenirs and find out about the history of the building.L’shanah Tovah (Happy New Year!)

The Memphis Trolleys

Memphis was a city I visited a few times for business but only came away with hours of work and memories of good barbecue. For the first time we spent a few days as tourists and we loved the small city. It has a unique culture, great music, and wonderful people. One of the big surprises was the streetcar system.

Coming from Pittsburgh gave us and appreciation and fond memories of streetcars. However, we had nothing like these wooden beauties. The Memphis Area Transit Authority trolley system began running in 1993. Although the trolleys enjoyed a 21-year run of shuffling locals and tourists through the heart of the city, they haven’t operated in Memphis since 2014, when service was suspended after fires broke out on two cars. They just returned to the city last year. Leave your car in the garage, the trolly is fun and inexpensive.

Run Around The Square 2018

Tomorrow is race day in my neighborhood. Its time for Run Around The Square. Its actually two races in one.

The first race is a 1.5 mile fun run through our neighborhood. People can enter with their dogs and children. The second race is through the neighborhood and through Frick Park ending in Fern Hollow. At the end there are free hot dogs and beer. Along the route there are at least ten musical entertainers. Its a fun event for everyone.

Doorways of München #2

Last month I published a series of images entitled Doorways of Prague . Traveling through Europe I have always been fascinated with the architecture. Sometimes it is difficult to capture a whole structure in an image but you can always capture the entire doorway.On my last trip I realized how the doorway is in some way a synopsis of the whole structure.

So here is a new series The Doorways of München (Munich). I am sorry I am not disciplined enough to take notes of the location of each doorway.

I like images that are not always what they first appear to be. It looks as if this family is upset because the fountain was spitting at them. Of course that is not the case. I am sure it is also not called The Spitting Fountain of Munich

Stolen Art at Museum Judenplatz Wien

The Jewish Museum of Vienna is a fascinating and well curated collection. The displays are thoughtful and well presented. Although some sections brought tears to my eyes. Some I viewed with amazement. One area did both.

This is a picture of one part of the 4th floor archive archive. It is filled with all the valuable Torah decorations that the Nazis stole form the European Jews. They burned all the scrolls but kept all the decorations made of gold and silver.

It bears repeating that this picture is only one section. The whole third floor of the museum is filled with other glass cases just like this.

Mozart Lives!

Every big city has its street hustlers. In NYC there are the guys selling fake Rolex watches, in Honolulu it’s guys selling cruises and snorkel tours but Vienna has its own breed. Many guys of different appearance in white wigs and costumes selling tickets to Mozart concerts.

Vienna is a city of music and every night at multiple venues there are different concerts of mostly Mozart. Mozart is a really big deal in Vienna where he lived for a period. The hustle is the same but it does seem to be slightly higher class.

Acid Rain at Saint Stephens

Of course I am not a Catholic or Christian for that matter but appreciate visiting ancient churches. Cathedrals in Europe are some of the most wonderful examples of architecture in the world. I also had a special interest in Stephansdom. Stephen is my middle name and Saint Stephen is one of my favorite Grateful Dead Songs.

In any case I was shocked to see the toll acid rain has taken on the cathedral when we visited in 2016. I was use to seeing this on other cathedrals in Europe but because of the colorful special roof of this edifice it was even more disheartening.

As you can see they are making progress in the restoration but like other ancient structures it is a constant battle.

Waiting in Isolation

Outside of St. Stephen’s Cathedral (Stephansdom) in Vienna the carriages wait for tourists. I saw a number of the drivers looking at their cellphones like this man. It occurred to me that in other times the men would probably gather together to share stories while they waited. There might have even be laughter or shouting as they shared the trials and tribulations of their jobs.

In our new society of isolation each man is alone with their virtual self and waiting for the world around them to deliver a fare. Forced isolation rather the sharing brotherhood with their fellow horsemen.
