Datura Blossoms

Datura is a plant that grows in warm climates and is also known as “angel’s trumpets” and “moonflower”. It has long been known to have hallucinogenic properties and commonly used by Yaqui and other Native American tribes in rituals. I have a friend who is an emergency room doctor and she talks about all the kids that come to the ER because they have ingested Datura or part of the plant. The blooms however are beautiful but you need to be careful if you have dogs or other pets if you have this plant in your garden.

Yellow! Yellow! Yellow!

In the Robert Altman Classic “Nashville”, actress Geraldine Chaplin plays a journalist. She walks around babbling into a hand held tape record about everything she sees. In one scene she is walking through a field filled with abandoned School Busses saying in her funny British accent “Yellow, Yellow, Yellow.

This orchid got the message. Grown and cared for with many others by my friend Jerry Synowiec in Florida.

Storks on Holiday

Storks have a full life. I mean just think about delivering all those babies! This is Lettuce Lake Park in Tampa and this is where they go to hang out during their down time. I try not to disturb them and let them have their r and r.

Sunset Sail

There is a major reason I like West Florida better than East Florida. On the east coast everyone gets up early to see the sunrise over the beach. I don’t like getting up too early. On the West coast everyone heads for the beach to see the Sunset. A perfect time of day to see nature’s beauty and most days there are beautiful sunsets at Clearwater Beach. The only thing better would be to on one of those sailboats.

Pink Orchid

Living in Florida this winter was filled with many shocks and surprises. For one, I didn’t expect to see orchids in full bloom. I figured they need the full warmth of summer to bloom but some apparently like the cooler weather.

My Tampa friend, Jerry grows many orchids and this pink one was ready for its close up.

Volleyball Princess

For the last two months we have been living on Clearwater Beach and have only returned to Winterfell this week. We witnessed a number of events on the beach. We were there long enough to be able to identify the homeless people and have favorite waiters and waitresses. This is maybe my new standard in knowing if I have been in a place long enough to “know” it.

One of my favorite events was the Southern Regional Volleyball tournament on Clearwater Beach. This young lady has three things going for her; a killer serve, a winning smile and great form.

Adios Tampa Bay

Tomorrow we begin to wind our way north back to the cold wilds of the Northland. We say goodbye to pelicans, spoonbills, herons, young men in speedos and bikini babes. Back to the mountain without Cine Bistro, sushi resturants and without our lifelong friends that took such good care of us.

We will be back Tampa Bay next winter and instead of being in a beach hovel we will be in a lovely little house in Dunedin about 500 feet from St. Joseph Sound. Until then, adios.

Shadows of Palm

Our time in the southland is drawing to a close. Soon we will be winding our way north ending our southern hiatus will end. Like the Robin, hopefully we will be the harbinger of an early Spring. Like this image, golden warm sunsets will be shadows until summer arrives.
