Pittsburgh Three Rivers Regatta 2016

This was our first year for visiting the Three Rivers Regatta in Pittsburgh. It was interesting, different and a lot of fun. We didn’t get to spend too much time. We had been out all afternoon registering voters and we were hot and tired. Next year I would like to make a day of it. See some music, take a tripod and do some serious photography

Below are a couple of snapshots form this year’s event.

Francisco Cervelli

Some of my friends have already given up on the Pittsburgh Pirates for this year and I have to admit it does look grim.As I watched the Buccos lose the other night with a catcher on the mound to finish the final inning; I began to add up the Pirates injuries. Sure we are missing our pitching ace (Gerrit Cole)and although two of our other starters aren’t injured but they are playing like the are. However, nobody is missed more that this guy. Hurry back Francisco, we need you!

Gerrit Cole

Last week I saw Gerrit Cole, The Pittsburgh Ace pitch for the second time of the season. The first time he pitched amazing! He had absolute control, 11 strike outs but made a throwing error that scored two runs and lost the game. Last week he struggled. He couldn’t throw a strike out but the team scored enough runs for Mark Melancon to get the save. Baseball is a funny game. Cole is a really good pitcher and saw I him on television hit a homer and double in the same game. I had doubts about our Buccos in the beginning of the year but really like the way they are playing right now.

Safe at Second

Last week we went to two really good baseball games. I haven’t been to so many games since I was a kid and we have been enjoying our time in PNC Park. Last week Gregory Polanco was called out at second on a pick off play. It was the first game this year that I took my camera to a game. When Clint Hurdle challenged the play, I knew and so did anyone else sitting next to me in Section 4 that he was safe.

Surfer Dude

If the wind is low and the waves small you will usually see people on longboards paddling through the water off Sunset Beach Florida as the sun sets. If the sky is gray and the winds are gusting there are no beach loungers walking the shore just all the young dudes.

La Playa Paraiso

After visiting Tulum, we went to a lovely beach on the Riviera Maya called La Playa Parariso. The sand was pure white and the reef that runs for 70 miles along the coast offers gentle waves and warm waters. There was a nice little beach club offering drinks and traditional Mexican fare. I can’t wait to go back.

A Night at The Ballpark

This year we have been to 5 Pittsburgh Pirates games and one Steelers game and the two experiences couldn’t be more different. Of course we can afford to have seats on the 100 level for the Bucs and for the Steelers we were in the 500’s near the end zone. At the Bucs game you feel you are out for a night with friends you don’t know. All age groups are represented and yes there are a few drunks and occasionally you may here a swear word.

The NFL game is totally different. People have been drinking and tailgating for hours. There are no children. There are a lot of very large men. Even the language is different. Even the restrooms are different. You feel kind of on edge at all times. Women can’t have purses or fanny packs and are forced to carry their stuff in clear plastic bags they sell outside the gates. Photographers can’t have telephoto lenses and being profane and drunk seems to be a requirement. We are going to see another Steelers game in October and we will be better prepared. My wife has her plastic bag and I will not be carrying a camera and hell yah I will swear damn it!

From last nights game at PNC Park Cubs v Pirates. Note the bartenders at McFadden’s before the game move so fast they actually blur in photos!

A-A-Ron

I love the Pittsburgh Steelers and I have been one of the fans that have been able to forgive Ben Rothlisberger and embrace him as our quarterback. Big Ben is a great team leader and statistically is every bit as good as Aaron Rodgers. However, nobody “looks” better than Aaron Rodgers throwing a football. He is the Jerry West of the NFL and his silhouette could be the logo for the NFL in the same way that West is for the NBA. This picture was taken at Heinz Field during a pre-season game last Sunday.

First Team Offense

The Steeler defense still needs some work although some players like Heywood and Shazier looked great in yesterday’s pre season game against the Packers The first team offense looked good and although it was hot, the crowd was rowdy and ready for football.

Smiling Lake George

There are a number of boats that offer parasailing on Lake George. My favorite was the Smile Boat. Not because the parasail design is that great but because it represents the opposite of how I would feel if I were parasailing. Even when I was younger this is not something I would have considered doing. I liked water skiing and still like to snorkel. I learned how to like roller coasters and thrill rides but parasailing has never been on my list.
