Greeting the Rising Sun

As a photographer I have risen frequently to greet the morning sun. I am always struck by the birds. If you are going to take a sunrise picture you want to be on the scene before the sun rises. If you are real early in the eerie light you can hear the birds waking up but can’t see them. Then you will begin to see them perched and stretching their necks, fluttering their wings and then as the sun begins to peek out flight.

Power Trip

We sat sipping margaritas waiting for the sunset on the Blue Docks in Cancun. I was amazed as we watch this speed boat. People were strapped into the back and the boat slowly went out into the center of the lagoon and then came full throttle at the pier. Before hitting the pier, the boat would do a sharp turn trying apparently to throw the idiot passengers from the boat. It was very loud and they would make a huge wave and then chug back out into the center of the lagoon and do it again. People pay to experience this and I am not quite sure why.

Templo Del Alacrán

The Templo del Alacran is located adjacent to The Westin Lagunamar Ocean Resort atop Cancún’s highest peak. It is not much of a peak but one of the few cliffs in Cancún that looks out toward the Caribbean Sea. It is also known as the Scorpion’s Temple. Scorpions are a special animal in the Mayan culture. It is believed that this ruin may have been a lighthouse for the city of Tulum although it may have predated the existence of Tulum. This picture was taken at sunrise.

Tulum

Tulum is the last Mayan city constructed before the Spanish invasion and conquest of Mexico. It was constructed on the east coast of the Yucatán Peninsula on the Caribbean Sea in what is now the Mexican state of Quintana Roo. The city was constructed along the cliffs overlooking the Caribbean and served as a port for other Mayan cities like Coba which was the de facto capital of the Mayan Empire. The ruins are fun to visit because afterwards you can swim in the mild Caribbean waters sheltered by a large reef providing gentle waves and pure white sand.

Sunset Silhouette

Sunrises and sunsets are magic. Not just for photography either, there seems to be a special aura and energy that happens at this time of day. I think that sunsets on the beach or on a boat are real amazing life events. This one is from a boat on the lagoon side of Cancun.

Sculpture Garden

Isla Mujeres off the coast of Cancún Mexico has a wonderful sculpture garden near South Point. We stumbled on it after driving our little golf kart over the entire island.

The sculptures are located on a cliff overlooking the Caribbean Sea and there is a gift shop and cantina overlooking the sea.

Pick Up Game

Each night before sunset there was a pick up volleyball game on the beach at Lagunamar in Cancún Mexico. The players varied in skill but all seemed to be having fun and nobody took it too seriously. Last year I photographed the Regional Finals in Clearwater Beach Florida which was very intense by comparison.

The Mask Guy

We saw this guy in Canún Mexico. Young children seemed to be scared of him yet completely unafraid of the smelly old pirate just a block away. Then it occurred to me that kids see Pirates all the the time but the Jim Carey movie The Mask was thirty years old!

Sunset Silhouettes

I love taking pictures at sunset. It used to be that I was happy with just the beustiful color of the sky. As I matured as a photographer I began to feel the boredom of the empty sky.

Recently I have become fascinated with silhouettes against the setting sun. The forms add texture and movement to a static skyscape. This image was captured on the docks at Las Islas in Cancun Mexico.
