Tarpon Springs is a beautiful little town that is known as the sponge Capitol of the USA. You can see the boats loaded with sponges in the harbor. Most of the parking lots were full, yet this one was completely empty. Even so, we couldn’t bring ourselves to park here.

I think I could spend weeks just observing pelicans fish. Pelicans are large birds an easy to identify and beautiful in flight.

Dancing Pelican
I hail from the Pennsylvania Mountains home to, among other things, Black Bears. We know we don’t feed the Bears and that includes being careful with your garbage. If they know about your trash or you feed them, you will never get rid of them. They get lazy.
I think the same is true of fishermen in Florida. The Pelicans seem to hang out around boats and fishing piers, stealing the catch whenever they can. I saw fishermen swear at the Pelicans but others were feeding the birds their bait. Talk about mixed messages!

Fish Thieves
I was telling my wife that over the years of visiting Florida, I had never seen a White Pelican. My mother who had lived in West Palm Beach had thought they were going extinct. Turns out they are migratory and real snowbirds!
We visited the Ding Darling nature preserve on Captiva Island and saw hundreds of these large birds. They are much larger than brown pelicans or even bald eagles for that matter with a nine foot wing span. I was fortunate to capture one in flight.
