Just about everything in the Pompidou Centre expresses modern art. As you take the escalator to the higher floors you are treated to Soundscape by former Grateful Dead drummer Mickey Hart. The elevator to the ground floor is also a work of art and changes appearance depending on the position of the ascending or descending elevator. Orléans France is a sister city to New Orleans and while they have much in common they are fundamentally different. They both offer scenic beauty, architecture and are along important rivers. Both cities serve great food to their guests and have wide choices in dinning. New Orleans however is edgy, vibrant and sometimes a little vulgar. Orléans is almost bucolic in nature; they keep their edgy in Paris which is an hour away by train. This is a street in in Orléans adjacent to river Loire. The Pompidou Center is one of the greatest modern art museums in the world. If you manage to get all the way to the top you will also see one of the great views of Paris. It is worth the ride up the giant escalators listening to the drumscape provided my Mickey Hart just to see the view. Of course the top floor has some great exhibits too. Lunch time in Paris
The Sorbonne University is in the Latin Quarter on the Left Bank of Paris and a great place to walk around.It is one of the first Universities in the World and dates back to the early 13th Century. The architecture is striking and there are many nooks and crannies to explore. This door is the entry to the Law School across from the Pantheon. One of the things I love about old European cities are these magical entryways they have to enclosed enclaves that date back to the middle ages. L’Université Paris-Sorbonne
I still have no idea what this was all about. One Gendarme looks totally bored while the other listens patiently while the man’s girlfriend who is out of this frame looks fervently through her purse. The Gendarmes changed direction and walked, albeit slowly in the direction the man pointed. The man and his girlfriend followed them. A robbery? Directions? No clue. I am not religious, not Catholic or Christian. Culturally I am Jewish but I don’t have particularly popular views when it comes to religion. Knowing this, my wife asked why do we always visit Cathedrals when traveling in Europe. Thinking about that, it is because I DO believe in God and being inside these magnificent architectural structures surrounded by all that great art makes me somehow feel closer to God. It has nothing to do with dogma. In any case, after the terrible massacre at Newtown Connecticut, I thought some might have comfort in seeing this image today from Mass at the Basilica Sacré-Cœur in Montmartre, Paris France. I first noticed people doing this years ago in New York city. People all over the world try to get a unique perspective on a monument or palace by pinching it. If the angle is right,one can create a unique perspective or comical picture. One of the most famous is people pushing or leaning against the Leaning Tower of Pisa. I don’t think these people got it right, they are too close to the Eiffel Tower, but they sure look like they had fun trying. This was shot across the river from the tower atTrocadero Plaza.
