Diamond Head

I was very unimpressed with Honolulu and Waikiki Beach. Maybe it is because I visited Kauai and Maui many times before ever spending any time on Oahu except for the airport. Maybe it was because I thought Miami had better beaches. Maybe it was because Honolulu reminded me of Miami. Maybe it was because of all the street hustlers and the crowded beaches. In any case the one thing I did like was Diamond Head. It was a great place to hike and quiet and serene compared to noisy Waikiki beach. Whenever we travel on vacation we miss our dog so we tend to glom on to other peoples dogs. These two were playing on the beach at Kaanapali beach in Maui near a Maui Family Sunday Picnic. Life on Mars?

On a recent trip to Mars I observed these cloud formations leading me to the conclusion that life is possible! Oh, wait a minute it wasn’t Mars it WAS Maui. This is a morning view from the crater at Haleakala National Park in Maui. The park is 10,000 above sea level and quite a miraculous ride to the top. It can be very cold so make sure you bring a warm jacket or coat. The astronauts trained here before the moon mission because NASA thought the terrain was the most similar one in the USA to the surface of the moon. The views are spectacular. Rock Stacking on Maui

We first came across this spot while driving to Honukua bay to snorkel with the giant Honu or sea turtles. There were literally hundreds of these rock stacks looking over the Pacific ocean. We convinced ourselves that it must be some sort of old Hawaiian religious ritual. We also noticed them on Haleakala and other places on the island. I did some research and they have nothing to do with Hawaii. Apparently people do this all over the world and since then I have noticed them in other places at well. Just Another Maui Sunset

One of the advantages of staying at Ka’anapali Beach in Maui is that each day you are treated to a beautiful Sunset. Sure very rarely it may rain but one of the most difficult decisions of the day is where to view the setting sun. In summer I like to be dinning on the beach at The Barefoot Bar or Pacifico and see the setting sun as we enjoy cocktails before dinner. Wish I was There!

I hate the winter. I am not a winter sports enthusiast. Today I will have to put on long underwear just to be able to walk my dog in 4 degree weather. My mustache will ice up. My dog will start to whimper after a while because of the salt on the roads and the cold. I would much rather be in Maui today watching this guy doing his thing, snorkeling, swimming and watching a beautiful sunset while eating fish that was caught the same day. Sigh. While visiting Maui, planing dinner is really important. The trade winds keep bugs away and the temperatures are so mild you can dine outdoors every night. The advantage of doing this is that each evening you can see a beautiful light show while you dine. This was shot at the Japengo restaurant in the Maui Hyatt at Ka’anapali Beach. Honokohau Bay

Honokohau Bay is located in West Maui beyond Ka’anapali Beach and the main tourist area. The road around the west side of the island is a challenging drive and not as well known as the road to Hana so less crowded and traveled. To the right of this little cove is a rocky beach which is one of the best spots in Maui to swim and snorkel with giant sea turtles or Honokohau. Dive boats come here to dock because their passengers are pretty much guaranteed to see turtles and maybe also spinner dolphins.
