Lilies

Our lilies have a lot of buds so I am hoping to see another season like this one from a couple years back. You can see more images like this one and buy prints at my commercial gallery by clicking here.

Bear out Back

When we moved to Long Island years ago and I met my next door neighbor, he didn’t shake my hand or give words of welcome but instead pointed to 8 foot hedges that bordered our property and said, “Those are yours, make sure you trim them!”. That experience essentially framed my three years of living on Long Island or as I describe it hell on earth. Fifteen years later we left the welcoming and friendly town of Montclair NJ where we raised our family and got a new set of neighbors. Now as we prepare to leave the mountains and return home to Pittsburgh I will miss these new neighbors which turned out to be friendlier than most. I took this image from my back yard deck and you can buy a print and see others by clicking here.

Diamond Head

I was very unimpressed with Honolulu and Waikiki Beach. Maybe it is because I visited Kauai and Maui many times before ever spending any time on Oahu except for the airport. Maybe it was because I thought Miami had better beaches. Maybe it was because Honolulu reminded me of Miami. Maybe it was because of all the street hustlers and the crowded beaches. In any case the one thing I did like was Diamond Head. It was a great place to hike and quiet and serene compared to noisy Waikiki beach. Life on Mars?

On a recent trip to Mars I observed these cloud formations leading me to the conclusion that life is possible! Oh, wait a minute it wasn’t Mars it WAS Maui. This is a morning view from the crater at Haleakala National Park in Maui. The park is 10,000 above sea level and quite a miraculous ride to the top. It can be very cold so make sure you bring a warm jacket or coat. The astronauts trained here before the moon mission because NASA thought the terrain was the most similar one in the USA to the surface of the moon. The views are spectacular. Buck Season

Today is a holiday in many counties in Pennsylvania since it is the beginning of antlered deer season. Over 100,000 deer were “harvested” in Pennsylvania last year, yet the population continues to rise. I only hunt deer with a camera, but understand the need of hunting to control the herd. Still, they are beautiful animals to look at like this eight point buck from a few years ago. They are kind of smart since there is no hunting in our community so we see our deer population soar during hunting season only to spread out during the rest of the year. I don’t know how they understand to hide here. You can buy a print of this images and see others at my gallery by clicking here.

Winter is Coming!

I am not talking about Game of Thrones or Winterfell either. All signs here point to a mild winter. The caterpillars are not too wooly and there are tons of acorns on the ground. Somehow, I feel that we will get more snow than last year which, is not saying much because last winter never happened. Won’t be too long though until sources like this will become common. Pennsylvania Wetlands

Wetlands is the new politically correct word for a swamp. Just sounds better doesn’t it? Wetlands in Pennsylvania are homes to bears, snakes and migratory birds and a valuable water source. In the autumn they take on a wonderful color like this spot in the Pocono Mountains. You can purchase a print of this image and see others on my commercial site by clicking here.

Falling Leaves

It is fall in the Pocono Mountains and the leaves are falling down creating splashes of color everywhere. While the autumn is beautiful, the leaves can create a huge mess. Sometimes there are a lot of wet leaves on a mountain road and they are easy to skid on or slip on while walking. Hopefully it doesn’t snow too early because a heavy snowfall on top of leaves equals one colossal cluster ____. However it is all worth it to see the crown of natures beauty. Autumn in the Poconos

Around the corner from my house is this little pond that is part of the Maple Swamp. Swamp in the Pocono Mountains means something different than it does in the South or near the equator. Sure we have the occasional Black Bear and you have to watch out for a rare copperhead but there are no large snakes and alligators. This is my neighborhood in the fall, you can buy a print at my commercial gallery by clicking here.
