Run Around the Square

We love our new Regent Square neighborhood in Pittsburgh so when the opportunity presented itself to volunteer for the annual race we jumped on it. Next year we will volunteer again but are also planning to walk in the 5K race. Run Around The Square started in 1982, four years after we left the Pittsburgh area. In the first year the race just had over 90 entries. This year the Run Around the Square was capped at 1800 entries.

The race features three categories. A 1.5 mile family walk and 1.5 mile dog walk through the streets of Regent Square. Then a 5 kilometer race through Regent Square and into Frick Park. The race has many sponsors and supports local charities. We posted some pictures below of walkers and racers as they went passed the barricade we were manning on our street. The weather was perfect!

Candidate #15…Bass Hands

I am going to be posting images that I may have posted before with a candidate # thereby collecting a list of what I feel would be likely candidates to print for a gallery show of new images of only digital photography. This is of Chris Wood while performing with Medeski, Martin and Wood at the Sherman Theather in Stroudsburg Pennsylvania. Please feel free to leave comments if you agree or disagree about including them in a “best of” list.

Three Rivers Arts Festival

Each year during the first two weeks of June, Pittsburgh hosts the three rivers arts festival. The events take place at the confluence of the Ohio River at Point State Park where the Allegheny and the Monongahela rivers meet. There are free concerts, ethic foods and fantastic art for sale in addition to a juried art show. We didn’t have a lot of time to spend this year, a Pittsburgh Pirate game beckoned and it WAS hot. We did manage to get a couple of photos to share.

The Black Rock Negative Energy Absorber was a temporary exhibit that travels the country. You touch the black rock and it absorbs all your negative energy. No really!

Another temporary installation were Dogs Under the Bridge. You go under the bridge to get to the vendors and the park and these quite well behaved dogs were there to great you.

This guy was pathetic. His suit was taped together and he walked very slowly with his head hung. It was almost 90 degrees and I am sure he scared more kids than not.

A great place to chill out is at the fountain built on the spot where The Ohio River begins.

Chicago Bound

We are headed out tomorrow to see our family in Chicago.A few years ago I constructed this piece of nonsense which was shot in Chicago but has little to do with the great city or my family. It is a little surreal which is probably why I like it. Please let me know your thoughts and I will be back with more in about a week.

Jungle Drums

Jungle Drums above a popular cenote near Cancun Mexico. The young leopard drummer was one of three dancing and entertaining as the more fearless visitors walked down hundreds of stairs to swim in the denote and the rest of the more sane people watched the musical performance.

Bok Tower

The beautiful tower complete with carillon was built by Pulitzer Prize winning author, Edward W. Bok in 1929. You can stroll the magnificent gardens while listening to classical music on the amazing carillon performed by famous music masters from Belgium, France and the USA.

It is located in Lake Wales Florida and at the highest point in Florida offering great views of the citrus groves surrounding the area. You can even tour Mr. Bok’s house and just imagine living there in the 1930’s

School Days

Stanley Clarke playing at the Stanley Theater in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania. The guitarist was Ray Gomez and was part of the School Days album tour in 1976. We recently saw him play with Return to Forever and he has not lost a lick. One of the best bass guitarists of all time.

Chris Wood

Chris Wood from Medeski,Martin and Wood is one of the world’s best bass players. During their current “acoustic tour” he played three different basses during the show. When he plays the “stand up”bass the instrument seems to become part of his body. Click here to see other images or by a print of this one.
