Grey Towers

Grey Towers was the summer home of Gifford Pinchot. Among other things Pinchot was the first Chief of the United States Forest Service from 1905 until his firing in 1910, and was the 28th Governor of Pennsylvania. The splendid grounds and views from Grey Towers are free to the public but there is a small charge for a tour of the interior of the mansion. It is in Milford Pennsylvania and beautiful and a tribute to his work in environmental conservation. See more scenic views and buy prints at my commercial site.

Palm Canyon

Outside of Palm Springs California is a park called Indian Canyons. There are a number of trails but the most popular is the Palm Canyon trail which is 15 miles long. A natural spring creates a swath of palms and other greenery in the rough rock canyon and desert terrain. The Palm Springs area in southern California is a favorite oasis for people needing some time in the warm desert without giving up the luxuries of an urban environment. There are great restaurants, shopping and other creature comforts coupled with beautiful desert canyons, luxurious swimming pools and 5 star golf courses. Almost every night there are dramatic sunsets and even in the summer, the air is dry and clear. Buy a print of this one and see other images at my commercial gallery.

Bear out Back

When we moved to Long Island years ago and I met my next door neighbor, he didn’t shake my hand or give words of welcome but instead pointed to 8 foot hedges that bordered our property and said, “Those are yours, make sure you trim them!”. That experience essentially framed my three years of living on Long Island or as I describe it hell on earth. Fifteen years later we left the welcoming and friendly town of Montclair NJ where we raised our family and got a new set of neighbors. Now as we prepare to leave the mountains and return home to Pittsburgh I will miss these new neighbors which turned out to be friendlier than most. Life on Mars?

On a recent trip to Mars I observed these cloud formations leading me to the conclusion that life is possible! Oh, wait a minute it wasn’t Mars it WAS Maui. This is a morning view from the crater at Haleakala National Park in Maui. The park is 10,000 above sea level and quite a miraculous ride to the top. It can be very cold so make sure you bring a warm jacket or coat. The astronauts trained here before the moon mission because NASA thought the terrain was the most similar one in the USA to the surface of the moon. The views are spectacular. While visiting Maui, planing dinner is really important. The trade winds keep bugs away and the temperatures are so mild you can dine outdoors every night. The advantage of doing this is that each evening you can see a beautiful light show while you dine. This was shot at the Japengo restaurant in the Maui Hyatt at Ka’anapali Beach.
