Sunset in Paradise
On Saturday we are venturing to Quintana Roo and our Westin Condo at Lagunamar in Cancun for a week of fun in the sun. We have never been there before. People have told me that the white sand beaches at Cancun and Islas Mujeres are the best in the world. After all it is where the Movie “Ten” was shot and all men my age can still see Bo Derreck’s slow motion trek across the sand in their mind’s eye. We shall see. This is Ka’anapali Beach in Maui County in the State of Hawaii and still my favorite white sand beach. We shall see.

Ka’anapai Beach
My wife and I visited San Francisco and Monterrey California for our twentieth anniversary. A few years later we took our daughter there for a visit on the way to Los Angeles. We had told our daughter about all the Seals we had seen in San Francisco but of course when we got there the seals were not where we had left them six years earlier. The park official in San Francisco told us they were gone from the area and migrating to the channel islands. We were disappointed. A few days later after getting to Monterrey Califronia we were walking towards the aquarium and we smelled them before we saw them. They were all over the harbor, hundreds maybe thousands of Seals. They bark like dogs and fight and play like dogs but smell of the sea! I took this image while we watched them off the pier.

Dog Fight
The world is full of beautiful vistas but it is hard to imagine a place more beautiful than Big Sur. The road twists and turns between Carmel and San Luis Opbispo and each turn reveals a new and stunning vista. It is hard not to stop every mile or so just to take in the view. The first time I visited was in 1968 and when I went back ten years later it seemed to not have changed, rugged wild and beautiful. You can buy a print of this image by clicking here.

Big Sur
Driving the Hana Highway is a once in the lifetime experience, well at least I won’t do it again. I hate driving close to the edge of narrow roads without guard rails but fortunately my wife doesn’t and we got to take this wonderful drive. If you stop to look at every waterfall along the way it will take you all day. If I were to drive it again, I would definitely get a hotel or Inn and not drive back until the next day. Maui has two great drives in addition to this one. The scenic road to Haleakala and Route 340 on the West side which is my personal favorite.

On the Road to Hana
Atlantic City is fun at dawn. Most people are sleeping or still desperately gambling. You may see a runner or bike rider or someone out for a walk, but even in Summer the beach and boardwalk are relatively deserted. The morning is reserved for fisherman and gulls and an ocassional photographer like myself.

I love the way shore birds seem to rise up to greet the rising sun. At the beach in Atlantic City there are mostly gulls but hearing them call out to the morning sun is a great way to start any day and is soothing to the soul. You c see other images and buy prints at my commercial site.
Recently my wife and I celebrated our 42nd Wedding Anniversary (June 6). Last week my wife retired from her job as a High School French Teacher. I can’t wait to see what the next chapter in our life will be although it will probably begin with the publication of my first novel. We are now editing the novel together. In any case these events require a little celebration so tomorrow we are off to Revel in Atlantic City and have a spa day on Wednesday at the Bask Spa. Why, because we deserve it. I was very unimpressed with Honolulu and Waikiki Beach. Maybe it is because I visited Kauai and Maui many times before ever spending any time on Oahu except for the airport. Maybe it was because I thought Miami had better beaches. Maybe it was because Honolulu reminded me of Miami. Maybe it was because of all the street hustlers and the crowded beaches. In any case the one thing I did like was Diamond Head. It was a great place to hike and quiet and serene compared to noisy Waikiki beach. Diamond Head
Whenever we travel on vacation we miss our dog so we tend to glom on to other peoples dogs. These two were playing on the beach at Kaanapali beach in Maui near a Maui Family Sunday Picnic.
