The Joy of Golf

The legend is that Mark Twain once wrote that golf was “… a good walk ruined.” History tells us that he may not have said this at all but it has always been my opinion on golf. It seems a major investment in time and money for something that is essentially free. Golf seems to also cause a lot of anxiety and as a former country club bartender I could tell you some stories.

That said, a lot of people love the sport and for them I took this picture of a sculpture that seems to capture the joy. This is at a resort in Palm Desert California.

The Spitting Fountain of Munich

I like images that are not always what they first appear to be. It looks as if this family is upset because the fountain was spitting at them. Of course that is not the case. I am sure it is also not called The Spitting Fountain of Munich

Venice Fountain

I walked by this fountain twice before taking a picture of it. The light was all wrong, I didn’t have a tripod, It really deserves a movie but I just didn’t have time. I thought this fountain to be descriptive of the neighborhood it exists in.

Venice California is a little bit gaudy. a little bit seedy and very unique and has been for a long time. It has been for my lifetime the definitive California beach community and this fountain is a part of that essence.

The Brass Penis

I can’t remember where I took this picture. I think it was in Heidelberg. Oddly it reminded me of the The Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II in Milan. In the center of the Galleria there is a mosaic of a bull. Legend has it if you grind your heels of the balls of the bull you will have good luck. The mosaic has a hole in it from a life time of people spinning on the balls as this young lady is doing.

I don’t think this statue has any such legend but a lot of people have been rubbing the penis!

Kolner Rathaus (Cologne Town Hall)

For a city that was almost bombed out of existence, Cologne (Koln) has a historic sense of humor. The old city hall has been restored including the statue at its base of a man mooning the tax collector. The late Gothic style tower has an impressive 130 stone statues and the famous “Platzjabbeck”. This is a an ugly human male face that sticks its tongue out when the tower clock strikes the hour.

Rathaus-Glockenspiel Detail

Last year i published a post on the famous Glockenspiel in München Bavaria. Although it was a nice scenic picture of Town Hall where the Rathaus-Glockenspiel is located it occurred to me that you really couldn’t see the detail of this famous landmark. I recently found this closeup which provides a much better view of what the Rathaus-Glockenspiel is all about and why each day hundreds gather to see and hear the performance.

Heidelberg Sculpture

I wish we had more time when we were in Heidelberg. I feel we only scratched the depth of the city and want to go back there in the Summer since it was cold, rainy and grey the whole time we were there. I did have time to stop to take this picture of the this unusual sculpture with the Heidelberg castle in the background.

A Curator with a Sense of Humor

I am sure museum curators view themselves as special people and they should. They have to be extremely knowledgeable about a subject and love the minute details. They have to make difficult judgements which may impact people that are largely emotional and probably sometimes complete assholes. (artists) In addition they have to live the rest of their lives, raise families, go shopping and deal with mundane physical society in the same way that common folk do. I can see where this could dramatically impact a persons psyche and they could take themselves far too seriously.

Then there is the person that is the curator for the hall of architecture at the Carnegie Museum. This person is obviously a real human being with a sense of humor. I saw this and laughed and realized there is at least one curator in the world with a sense of humor. Thank you whoever you are.

A Couple of Statues

We went to see the Ai Weiwei exhibit at the Pittsburgh Carnegie Museum of Natural History. The sculptures were quite magnificent and next week we plan to revisit the Warhol Museum to see the rest of his exhibit in Pittsburgh. He is an awe inspiring artist and if you live in Pittsburgh it is a must see. I don’t usually photograph art in museums but I was taken with how statue like the guard was. He was almost as still as the sculptures themselves. What a zen job.I hope Ai Weiwei will forgive me for photographing his art.

Tree Mouth

I finally stopped to take a picture of the tree growing out of the head in Mellon Park. We had been driving past it for some time as we tooled down Fifth Avenue. It’s not amazing or anything just kind of clever and cool as is the rest of Mellon Park.
