The Gardens at Iao Valley State Park

At the base of Iao Needle Park in Maui is a beautiful International Garden we visit almost every time we are on Maui. The park has a wonderful peaceful feeling which led these young men in to the spirit of the dance. You can buy a print of this on my commercial gallery and see other images by clicking here.

Stop the World!

I used this image as the cover of my first book Stop the World!. One of my ex photography students said it made her feel voyeuristic to see this. I took that as a compliment. I believe Henri Cartier-Bresson would like this image after all it was a decisive moment.

Chicago Halloween

I used to travel a lot and was away on a few Halloweens. One thing I discovered is that it is pretty much the same everywhere in the United States but people from foreign cultures really don’t understand the insanity that Americans have with this day. This year I traveled to Chicago and sure enough they have Halloween there too.

Chicago from Lincoln Park

Lincoln Park is an upscale neighborhood of Chicago and has a strong German heritage and European feel. From a rooftop you can get a feel of how spread out the City is. Even at two miles from downtown Chicago with an 18mm Wide Angle lens it is difficult to capture the entire skyline. This is Chicago from a rooftop terrace.

The Palmer House Hotel–Chicago

Last weekend we visited Chicago to search for venues for my daughter’s wedding. The tour of the Palmer House came with a history tour that was very enlightening. The first hotel was built as a wedding present from Potter Palmer to his bride Bertha Honoré. It opened on September 26, 1871, but 13 days later it burned in the Chicago Fire. Palmer hired architect John M. Van Osdel to rebuild it. The hotel was rebuilt again in 1925 and in 1945 was purchased by Conrad Hilton for $20 million.

Many famous visitors have stayed there including Grover Cleveland, Ulysses S. Grant, William Jennings Bryan,William McKinley, Mark Twain, L. Frank Baum, and Oscar Wilde. Next year it will host my daughter’s wedding in awesome style.

Rock Striations

I always thought that striations on rock faces were evidence of glacial movement and maybe that is always true. However this cliff face was photographed in Indian Canyons in Palm Springs California and I am not sure if the glacier came that far south. It is an attractive an interesting pattern.

Joshua Tree California

Joshua Tree National Park is located north and east from Palm Springs California. It is a rustic and beautiful high desert spot with a very diverse horticulture. It is named after the unusual and plentiful Joshua Trees that are all through the park. The terrain is rugged high desert so bring your real hiking shoes.

Autumn Sunset

Winter comes quickly to the mountains. 40 miles away, the leaves have not yet hit peak color but here in the mountains the leaves are on the ground. You can see the shifting color and angle of the morning sun. The evening sunsets are cooler in color temperature but still brilliant to behold.

The Village of Biot

Biot is a medieval village in the hills of Provence between Antibes and Nice. It is what you would expect of a Village in Provence. Narrow ancient streets, historic ruins and great little cafes and restaurants. What makes Biot unusual is the ancient glass works that have been there for centuries. You can visit the glass works and see today’s craftsmen blow glass works of art in the same way they have done for centuries. You can also spend as much money as you want in the shop. Of course even the town street map is made from ceramic glass.
