Water Towers

We began our sail from Amsterdam in the Netherlands and stood on our veranda watching the Nederlands sweep by. Eight days and 7 ports later we would wind up in Basil Switzerland. Along the Waal river in Holland we saw a few buildings that look like castles. Closer looks reveal they are not. This is a water tower or pumping station. We also saw bridge abutments designed to look like castles.

Marksburg Castle Revisited

Last year I published an article on Marksburg Castle. Here are some additional views of the castle not in the original post.

Along the Rhine River is a stretch known as the Rhine Gorge which is a UNESCO world heritage site. Forty castles line both sides of this section of the river. Marksburg is the only castle that was never destroyed and sits above the town of Braubach. The fortress was used for protection rather than a residence for royal families.

Boppard Hamm Rhineland

The Boppard Hamm wine region is one of the largest in Europe. It lies between Boppard and Spay in the Upper Middle Rhine Valley in Germany. This section of the Rhine River is known as The Rhine Gorge and has been a World Cultural Heritage of UNESCO since 2002.

The river does a bend here and shields the damp west wind creating a great climate for growing grapes. As our ship cruises though the river bends you can see miles of fields like this and people picking grapes by hand.

Rhine River Village

One of the joys of cruising on a river is sitting on the veranda watching life pass by at an enjoyable pace. Sometimes the boat travels slow and you can see a beautiful vantage point on the land from the lazy river. This taken on the Rhine River near Koblentz Germany while cruising on the Viking Longboat Hiln. .

Karlsplatz Wien

We stayed at the Hotel Bristol in Wien (Vienna) which is literally steps away from the Karlsplatz Metro Station. On a rainy day we ducked into the station to avoid the rain. There is a shopping mall and cafes underground where we had breakfast, bought a hat and strolled under the street to emerge in Karlsplatz park.

The rain had stopped and the view was beautiful as we strolled through Vienna.

Kolner Rathaus (Cologne Town Hall)

For a city that was almost bombed out of existence, Cologne (Koln) has a historic sense of humor. The old city hall has been restored including the statue at its base of a man mooning the tax collector. The late Gothic style tower has an impressive 130 stone statues and the famous “Platzjabbeck”. This is a an ugly human male face that sticks its tongue out when the tower clock strikes the hour.
