Thinking About The National Aviary

Since returning to Pittsburgh we have been members of the National Aviary. It’s the largest Aviary in The United States and we are fortunate to have it in Pittsburgh. We go there often enough that I have my favorite birds and during this horrible pandemic I frequently wonder how they are doing. I can’t wait until we can venture out and visit again.

Missing the Phipps Conservatory

I am reading a novel by Stewart O’Nan entitled Emily Alone. The author is from Pittsburgh and his descriptions of our city are really accurate. The chapter I am reading today is about The Phipps Conservatory and he made me realize how much I miss going there. We are members and normally we visit three or four times a year. Not his year though, hopefully we will be able to go next year.

Happy Thanksgiving

This year is a sad thanksgiving. We can’t travel and see our families. The amazing Steelers are playing the Ravens and I will have to watch it on zoom with my family. That said, it could be worse. You could be one of these guys. Yinz all be safe and happy.

Run for Your Lives!

Three Rivers Heritage Trail Exploratory Mission

During this pandemic we have started to explore areas we haven’t visited before. In recent weeks we have traveled to Ligonier and North Park ro search for Eagles. Yesterday we stayed closer to home and parked the car in Millvale and walked a part of the The Three Rivers Heritage Trail, This is an urban rail trail paralleling the riverbanks in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and Allegheny County for about 33 miles. It is an easy walk offering nice views of the river. Next time we will take our dog.

Autumn Country Road

Country roads in Pennsylvania are special in the Autumn. We use to live in Pike County and travel this road almost every day. Familiarity can cause boredom but this road always seemed to be changing. In the spring the colors were faint but in autumn they were explosive. The same is true where we now live in Pittsburgh. You don’t have to go far to find a road with explosive autumn color and the drive becomes the destination.

Country Road In Pike County

North Park Exploratory Mission

We began to follow a Facebook group called North Park Eagles. We had no idea there were Eagles there. Growing up in Pittsburgh we were more familiar with the city Parks and South Park than North Park. So we decided to search for the Eagles realizing we would probably not find any. We didn’t but we now know the park a little better and where o search for them.

Still it was a beautiful day and we had a great hike and found one curious young buck that left his group in the tall grass to check us out.

University of Pittsburgh

The Cathedral of Learning is easy to take for granted if you live in Pittsburgh. We drive by it all the time but familiarity makes it no less spectacular or beautiful. Think about it. It is the tallest educational structure in the USA and third in the world. It is also one of the few built in an art deco style. Next time you cruise by take a moment for appreciation.

Chichen Itza One of The Wonders of the Modern World

I have been to only two of the wonders of the modern world. Unlike The Roman Coliseum, Chichen Itza is really a collection of wonders. Of course the the famous pyramid is the centerpiece. However, the ball field, observatory and smaller pyramids are all fascinating and worth seeing in their own right. Truly a remarkable experience.

Autumn Reflections

I am of a firm belief that good photographs tell a story, reveal a mystery or in some way createan emotional response. I do record scenes just because they are pretty but rarely offer them for sale or publish them, I identify more with Henri Cartier-Bresson than Ansel Adams. Sure I could have just take a picture of this colorful foliage. However, the story for me is how the reflections of the trees change the nature of the swampy wetland.
