Cancún Kiss

As many of you know, I have been working on a new Photography Book, Just a Kiss. This is a collection of images featuring people kissing in public places. This is the newest image and was taken on the Blu Deck in Cancún Mexico against the setting sun.

Sunset at the Blue Deck Cancun

Along the side of the Las Islas Shopping Center in Cancun is a strip of bars and cafes that face the setting sun. This sunset was taken from the famous Blue Deck during two for one happy hour and they make great and strong rum drinks.

Best Beach?

On Saturday we are venturing to Quintana Roo and our Westin Condo at Lagunamar in Cancun for a week of fun in the sun. We have never been there before. People have told me that the white sand beaches at Cancun and Islas Mujeres are the best in the world. After all it is where the Movie “Ten” was shot and all men my age can still see Bo Derreck’s slow motion trek across the sand in their mind’s eye. We shall see. This is Ka’anapali Beach in Maui County in the State of Hawaii and still my favorite white sand beach. We shall see.

Deer Kiss

This photograph was taken long before our society became scared of our own shadow. Now our government officials and media pundits constantly use fear to sell their positions. In the 1970’s there were no hand sanitizers and we didn’t know about lime disease. I can’t imagine a parent allowing their child to kiss a deer today, but back then it was no problem. Makin’ Tikis

I love watching street artists. I am always amazed by a number of things. One is that they can make something so complex and not be distracted by people staring and walking around. Or distracted by noise, dogs, little kids, the wind and a host of other things. This guy was particularly amazing because one slip of that chisel and his foot is chopped liver. I didn’t have the nerve to ask him if that had ever happened. This was shot on the street in Lahaina in Maui County Hawaii.

Changing Wetlands–Ed and Amy

Ten years ago when we moved here we came across this spot in the game lands which we called “Ed and Amy”. On the rock in the center of the small wetland area it was inscribed Ed + Amy in white paint. We used to walk through there with our dogs and wondered who Ed and Amy were and if they were still together. We hadn’t been down that trail for years and a couple of weeks ago we hiked back down to Ed and Amy. The rock was still there but the paint all gone now after ten Pennsylvania winters. The stream still runs through there but entropy at work has removed Ed and Amy from these wetlands.

Prelude to a Kiss

This photograph was taken in Como Italy a couple of years ago. It was the trigger that has caused me to look for images like this ever since to create a book of people kissing in public places. There is that moment, before two people kiss when you commit to the fact that it is inevitable. This is one of those moments.

Henri Cartier-Bresson created the concept of the the decisive moment. To capture such a moment is the essence of Photojournalism. I like to think that he would have appreciated this image. You can buy a print of this image at my commercial gallery by clicking here.

Kristallnacht

Americans have some dates burned in their memory. September 11 and December 7 are two notorious dates where Americans were attacked, killed and suffered extreme hardships. It is important as Americans to remember these dates and honor the fallen. However, as citizens of the world we MUST remember today as well because it is the 75th anniversary of Kristallnacht. Tonight were the first attacks on Jewish homes in Germany. At least 91 Jews were killed in the attacks, and a further 30,000 arrested and incarcerated in concentration camps. Jewish homes, hospitals, and schools were ransacked, over 1,000 synagogues were burned and Jewish businesses destroyed or damaged. Millions of others experienced death and torture by the lunatic Hitler. We must never forget and always honor this day. Things are much better in Europe now for Jewish people that have remained or returned over all these years. However, recently when visiting Italy I saw it was still necessary for soldiers to guard the synagogue in Milan and heavy fences kept out even curious tourists like myself.

Reading for Godot

Walking through the Sorbonne in Paris at lunchtime, I came across this scene. What else should a young Parisian student be doing at lunch other than reading. You can purchase a print of this image at my commercial site by clicking here.

Stop the World!

I used this image as the cover of my first book Stop the World!. One of my ex photography students said it made her feel voyeuristic to see this. I took that as a compliment. I believe Henri Cartier-Bresson would like this image after all it was a decisive moment.
