I can not see an iguana without thinking of the character that Tim Kazurinsky created on Saturday Night Live in the 1980’s. There are Iguanas all over Mexico. We had one near our condo which we named Iggy Pop for some unknown reason. We found this gal in ruins of Tulum Mexico. I found out that the females are smooth like this and the males have spikes along their spine.

The Iguana
Most people think that blending multiple images into one image began with the invention of Photoshop which is of course not true. I blended this image and many others in the darkroom in 1977 inspired by Master Photographer.Jerry Uelsmann.
Photoshop does make it easier though. To make Row for Your Life, I had to create a mask, make multiple exposures on photographic paper, process and dry. Of course it would have taken hours to get the two negatives. Shooting the images, processing the negative film, making contact prints before you could even evaluate which images you wanted to blend.

Flight
The Eiffel Tower remains closed today in the days following the cowardly bombings and murder in Paris. Although the creation of Gustave Eiffel’s masterpiece erected in 1889 was only supposed to a temporary entry arch for 1889 World’s Fair,it has remained to become the symbol of the city. I hope that soon the Champ de Mars is alive with people excited to ascend to the top and people flock to the Trocadero Plaza at sunset to see this sight.

Tour Eiffel
We live in a violent world. A friend reminded me yesterday of two other hideous events that happened this week in Beirut and Bagdad where more lives were lost than in Paris. Yet the violence in Paris impacted me more. Why? I guess because I have been there a few times and Paris is familiar. Of course that doesn’t make rational sense, horror is horror and terror is terror. It does however make emotional sense in the same way that seeing the fall of the World Trade Centers forces a visceral response.
In any case today is Sunday and although the season is wrong, this is the way I think of Paris on Sundays. I hope Parisians are taking to the streets,buying baguettes and enjoying the gardens.

Sunday in Paris
It is very hard to get a good shot of The Hall of Mirrors in Versailles on the tour. The place is lousy with tourists. It occurred to me that without a tripod and a hall empty of people the best I could hope for was a decent shot of the ceiling. By itself it is a pretty great fixture of the lavish palace.

Hall of Mirrors
If you follow this blog you know we have settled in to our new neighborhood in Pittsburgh. It is one of the three neighborhoods we wanted when we decided to relocate and was our first choice. We are only two blocks from Pittsburgh’s largest park and less than a half of mile form stores, restaurants and our very own movie theater that is the home of The Pittsburgh Film Makers. One of the things that makes it so special are the cobblestone tree lined streets.
A neighbor told me that the stones are actually Belgium block. Pittsburgh would ship steel to Belgium in the 1800’s and they would line the return holds with blocks for ballast. To maintain the neighborhood feel they don’t pave over the blocks. If there is a depression or hole, they remove the block, put in fresh fill and reset the blocks. This helps the neighborhood retain its old time feel.

In my neighborhood we can expect about 300 kids this Saturday. Seems like everyone decorates a little bit but there are certain houses in Regent Square that are Legend. So over the next few days I will be posting a few of the more dramatic Houses of Horror! This Zombie Rehab is on the street directly behind my house.

Scary House
Every year people flock to our state to see the beautiful Autumn foliage. If you don’t live in Pennsylvania you will be awed and happy you made the visit. However observing this every year makes some people, especially photographers obnoxious and cynical critics. Different weather factors impact the color. The temperature, humidity, rain fall and wind all impact how colorful and widespread the foliage panorama will appear.
2012 was the perfect storm for fall color in The Northeast. Of course it is a regional thing, one year the color may be better in Maine than Pennsylvania or New Hampshire may be the best. However, in 2012 it was prefect throughout the region. This is a 2012 flashback taken in October 2012 in the Pocono Mountains.
