Cruz Bay…St. John USVI

St. John in the United States Virgin Islands is one of the most laid back places on earth. 60% of the island is protected as Virgin Islands National Park, administered by the United States National Park Service. There is not a stop light on the island. There are two major resort hotels and a variety of restaurants and cafes. You get around the island by taking open air jitney cabs, walking or riding bikes. The snorkeling, hiking and beaches are some of the best in the world. I can’t wait to go back.

I just found this picture which was taken in Cruz Bay from the balcony of Pusser’s Grill in 1996. The restaurant is no longer there but I am sure the sunsets are still beautiful. I have posted this sunset before from the same dock on a different day.

Frick Park Fairy Doors

Frick Park in Pittsburgh is over 650 acres and the largest in the city. It has a wonderful collection of trails, two dog parks, playgrounds, baseball fields and even an occasional black bear can be spotted along with deer, rabbits and other forest creatures. Unknown to me until recently is that apparently fairies or Leprechauns also live in the park.

Along the Tranquil trail you can find many of these doors built in to tree stumps or even living trees. I have asked people about them and some say that parents construct them with their children. I don’t believe that for a minute. They must be fairy doors. I mean what else can they be?

Big Sur

Twice in my life I did the drive from Los Angeles to San Francisco along the Pacific Coast Highway. Once in 1968 by myself and once in the late 1990’s with my family. What was amazing is how little the area of Big Sur had changed in the thirty years between drives. It is still to this day a rugged and scenic area of unsurpassed beauty. I hope to make the drive at least once more in my lifetime. This picture was taken in the mid 1990’s about 100 miles south of Carmel California.

A Light Through The Window

This image could have been taken in a number of European cities. It was taken in Paris near the end of The 20th century. I was struck with the light coming through the top window and thinking it was a great apartment to live in. Now the steps would kill me.

En Bruges

I have never been to Venice where some people say the canals are beautiful and others say they smell like garbage or death. I have been to Amsterdam which is a beautiful city and loaded with wonderful canals which are actually part of the city’s flood control system. I have heard the canals are full of abandoned bicycles but can vouch they don’t smell of death or garbage.

Then there is Bruges which is sometimes called the Venice of the North. A magnificent ancient city with a wonderful network of canals. I have been there a number of times and each time I am struck again with the beauty of the ancient town and the cleanliness and blue waters of the canals. Everyone should visit at least once and if you can’t make the trip then at least watch the wonderful movie En Bruges and you will see what you are missing.

Yellow Lily

Normally I don’t photograph cut flowers. However at lunch the other day I was struck by the beauty of this bloom. No leaves damaged by insects, free of dirt from the wind this bloom offered perfection and I thought deserving of this closeup.

Black Dog

We were exploring a small town in Provence in the mountains near Saint Tropez. I kept constantly losing my family because it seemed that every twist and turn of the narrow streets held some photographic wonder. I stopped to photograph this small green door wondering what was behind it when this black dog tentatively peeked around the corner. I have never met a dog that frightened me but thought it was time to catch up with my family. The dog was French after all and probably hated tourists, especially ones with cameras.

Before The Sun Rises

Sometimes the best views at sunrise are before the sun actually rises. This was shot right before a sunrise in Atlantic City. The beach at Atlantic City for a long time has been considered one of the best beaches on the East Coast. I remember going there as a teen and was just amazed at how wide the beach was and the fine white texture of the sand.

The city has gone through a lot of changes since my youth. However, the beach has been a constant and now thanks to conservationists will continue to be so. After Hurricane Sandy they planted all these beach grasses. These will help to hold the dunes in place and protect the beach from erosion. Way to go New Jersey!

Magic Mirror

Milan is known for lots of things; fashion, parks, commerce, opera and great food. However, Milan is not known for its canals. Nor should it be. We found out that Milan had a canal only by reading the small print in a tour book. The canal is small and lined on one side with antique shops and clothing stores and on the other with restaurants and clubs.

In December of 2013 I published Canali di Milano which includes a scenic picture of the canal. This image of a mirror along the canal has long held my interest.

Rainbow Optional

If I win the lottery this is where I would live. This was for sale last time I was in Maui and it is nestled directly on Kaanapali Beach on the walkway between Whalers Village and the Hilton Hotel. They were asking $1.1 million at the time and yes it did have a pool secluded in the back. Rainbow is optional but usually available.
