The Funky Mailboxes of Sunset Beach–Part 1

For the last 5 weeks we have been in Florida and spending much of our time on Sunset Beach which is a residential beach community with the city of Treasure Island and adjacent to St. Petersburg. Sunset beach is a little dead end barrier island on the Gulf of Mexico and primarily made up of houses and small condos. There is little traffic, only two restaurants and a magnificent beach and small boardwalk along Boca Ciega Bay. Although we did most of our walking on the beach, we also walked through the community and noticed that many people had really special mailboxes. Here are a few of the better ones.

Hot Tub at Sunrise

OK, can’t think a better way to start the day than a pre dawn walk on the beach and watching the sunrise from a hot tub. The scene at the Westin Laguna Mar in Mexico.

La Playa Paraiso

After visiting Tulum, we went to a lovely beach on the Riviera Maya called La Playa Parariso. The sand was pure white and the reef that runs for 70 miles along the coast offers gentle waves and warm waters. There was a nice little beach club offering drinks and traditional Mexican fare. I can’t wait to go back.

Los Sombreros

I was sitting at La Playa Paraiso after a swim with my lady and looking to the sky for pelicans when I noticed this scene. A man taking a picture of his bathing beauty lady was enough to attract my attention. However, I had been observing the young man in the hat holding court under the palm tree for some time. I liked the juxtaposition of the two hats and took the picture. It wasn’t until I saw it on my 27″ display that I noticed the pat on the tush.

Before The Sun Rises

Sometimes the best views at sunrise are before the sun actually rises. This was shot right before a sunrise in Atlantic City. The beach at Atlantic City for a long time has been considered one of the best beaches on the East Coast. I remember going there as a teen and was just amazed at how wide the beach was and the fine white texture of the sand.

The city has gone through a lot of changes since my youth. However, the beach has been a constant and now thanks to conservationists will continue to be so. After Hurricane Sandy they planted all these beach grasses. These will help to hold the dunes in place and protect the beach from erosion. Way to go New Jersey!

Rainbow Optional

If I win the lottery this is where I would live. This was for sale last time I was in Maui and it is nestled directly on Kaanapali Beach on the walkway between Whalers Village and the Hilton Hotel. They were asking $1.1 million at the time and yes it did have a pool secluded in the back. Rainbow is optional but usually available.

Candidate #18–Boardwalk Bike Ride

I am going to be posting images that I may have posted before with a candidate # thereby collecting a list of what I feel would be likely candidates to print for a gallery show of new images of only digital photography. This image was taken at sunrise on the Atlantic City Boardwalk near the now defunct Revel Hotel and Casino. Please feel free to leave comments if you agree or disagree about including them in a “best of” list.

Candidate 17–The Road to Haleakala

I am going to be posting images that I may have posted before with a candidate # thereby collecting a list of what I feel would be likely candidates to print for a gallery show of new images of only digital photography. The ride to to the top of Haleakala National Park in Maui is almost as much fun as the Park itself. The drive takes you through many types of natural areas and climates and ends in a volcano crater which looks like the moon. This image was captured in the morning and you can see the true beauty of the Maui coast. Please feel free to leave comments if you agree or disagree about including them in a “best of” list.

Pick Up Game

Each night before sunset there was a pick up volleyball game on the beach at Lagunamar in Cancún Mexico. The players varied in skill but all seemed to be having fun and nobody took it too seriously. Last year I photographed the Regional Finals in Clearwater Beach Florida which was very intense by comparison.

The Hat Guy

It’s fun to watch the street peddlers and hucksters in Mexico. Each one has their own unique shtick. They are all pretty harmless and not agressive like they are in Waikiki. They won’t chase you down the street.

There are the pretty girls in tight dresses that flirt with you. The young men that act like you know them and that you are their best friends. People who are giving stuff away for free or so they say. Then there is this guy, the hat guy who is so happy he just can’t stand it!
