In Flight

If you have followed this blog at all you probably know that I love pelicans. For every pelican picture I publish there are fifty I don’t. Their method of fishing makes them balletic when hitting the water. It is different each time. They are also large birds and beautiful in flight. This is a Mexican brown pelican in flight over the beach in Cancun.

The Birdman of Pittsburgh

We have sold our house and are preparing to move ourselves back home to Pittsburgh. We left Pittsburgh in 1978 and have lived in State College PA, Dallas Texas, Smithtown Long Island,Montclair New Jersey and the Pocono Mountains since then. I took this the year before I left in Market Square. We always called this guy “The Birdman”. I wonder why?

Candidate #12—Flight

I am going to be posting images that I may have posted before with a candidate # thereby collecting a list of what I feel would be likely candidates to print for a gallery show of Photojournalism. This was taken at the Piazza del Duomo, Milano, Italy. I love the different ways each member of the family reacts to the bird. You can read, fear, exhilaration, pleasure and boredom on the different faces. Please feel free to leave comments if you agree or disagree about including them in a “best of” list.

The Pigeons of The Cathedral Santa Maria Nascente

In the plaza outside the The Cathedral Santa Maria Nascente in Milan the Pigeons gather just as they do outside other great cathedrals around the world. I wonder if Pigeons are Catholic? I myself have never been one to feed pigeons. I don’t think they need any survival help from me. However photographing this family was fun. I love the different expressions; the thrill of the young girl, the calmness of the father, the trying to be cool teen and the wonder of the boy are all in this single image.

Brown Pelicans at Ding Darling

The first time someone ever asked me “have you been to Ding Darling” I thought they were staring to tell me a dirty joke and just said “pardon me?” I later found out they were talking about the Ding Darling Wildlife Refuge on Captiva island in Florida. Turns out it is actually name for a guy called Ding Darling, but that is a whole other story.

It truly is a wonderful spot and even can be appreciated on a gray day like the one we were there. But the rain held off and the birds didn’t really care that is wasn’t sunny. To see other images and buy apparel or prints, please visit my commercial gallery.

Storks on Holiday

Storks have a full life. I mean just think about delivering all those babies! This is Lettuce Lake Park in Tampa and this is where they go to hang out during their down time. I try not to disturb them and let them have their r and r.

Attack Gulls

The Florida Gulf is haven to thousands of migratory birds. Some stop over on their way further south and some winter in the gulf before heading north. The gulls however are full time residents and they are nasty.

In our short time here we have seen them attack a little girl holding a cookie and swoop in and steal an ice cream cone from a man walking on a pier.

This “patrol” is standing watch on Pier 60 in Clearwater Beach looking for unsuspecting people carrying food items.

Flock of Bills

If you live where I live there are some birds you never get to see like Pelicans and Penguins. Another is the Roseate Spoonbill. They are found mostly in South America and in the USA can only be found in central and south Florida.

They are large birds with wingspans up to 55 inches and don’t look like they should be able to fly at all. These were seen in the Ding Darling sanctuary on Captiva Island Florida.

Little Blue Heron

“Little Blue Heron”sounds like a song title or a rock band name. We were in the Florida Botantical Gardens stalking Osprey and Aligators and this little blue guy started to follow us. I think he works for the NSA or something.

The Great Sitting Osprey

As we travel along the Gulf coast of Florida we have seen a lot of Osprey. However, I still have not seen one in flight. I think they might be a big fraud and just sit there all the time. A woman at a nature center showed me pictures of Osprey and they were all sitting.
