Smithsonian Candidate #6…Kinderjik

I am thinking of entering the Smithsonian Photo Contest even though I have zero chance of winning. I say that not to denigrate my ability as a photographer, but each category already has over 50,000 entries. Sure a lot of them are crap but some, well follow the link above and see for yourself. Also you can only submit work from 1/1/2016 until the present and all works with people must have a model release.

If you are familiar with any of my work (e.g. Moment and Souls) you probably realize I don’t have a lot of model releases.

Fortunately I do have some images that may qualify in other categories and will be publishing some here to see if you feel they quality. Please comment and let me know your thoughts. This one is in the Travel Category and is a view of a windmill of Kinderjik, Holland.

Moment#2–Shabbat Shalom

Last week Dale Schmitt and I opened our photo exhibition, Moments and Souls at the Percolate Gallery in Pittsburgh. I realize that many of you can not make it in to the gallery so over the next few weeks I will be publishing “the moments” that were my contribution to the show.

This image was taken in Prague in The Czech Republic outside the one remaining active synagogue. Before the war there were 11 synagogues and the Jewish population was around 300,000, today there are about 4000 Jews remaining and they are allowed to practice their faith without reprisals for the first since the 5th century.

Moment#1–Doppelganger

Last week Dale Schmitt and I opened our photo exhibition, Moments and Souls at the Percolate Gallery in Pittsburgh. I realize that many of you can not make it in to the gallery so over the next few weeks I will be publishing “the moments” that were my contribution to the show.

This one shows two boys inside Saint Stephen’s Cathedral in Vienna Austria. One is so angelic and the other well, not so much.

Moments and Souls Outtake #9

Along with Dale Schmitt of Pittsburgh, I am pleased to announce our photo exposition at The Percolate Art Space in Pittsburgh. The exhibition runs from November 8,2017 until December 2,2017.

Richard Burke and Dale Schmitt have over 80 years of combined photographic experience. They are both eclectic photographers with broad portfolios of commercial and artistic work. They photograph people but approach that part of their portfolio in completely different ways. Richard is all about capturing the decisive moment and Dale is a creator of portraits that capture the souls of his subjects.

Join us at the gallery to celebrate the human experience!

In order to whet your appetite we will be posting some outtakes. These are images that did not make the final cut for the exhibition but may be part of a book based on the show concept. This one was photographed during a fashion shoot when my dog Ace decided to join us.

Autumn in Praha

In so many ways, Praha (Prague) reminds me of Pittsburgh my hometown. There is a large Czech population in Pittsburgh and our ethic foods and culture has a definite Czech, Polish and German connection. The hills around the Czech Capitol are also reminiscent of the hills around Pittsburgh. The autumn colors make me think of home.

Taken in October 2016 from the park surrounding Prague Castle.

Play Me

In every country we visited throughout Europe we found pianos in public places available for public performance. This one was inside the mall adjacent to the Central Station in Amsterdam. The piano was in tune and pianist actually knew how to play.

Creative Tree Trimming

I have noticed that in Europe there is a formality and structure to even the smallest garden. This attention to detail extends to even the way they trim their trees. This tree is along the Rhine River near Breisach Germany
