Iglesia de San Jose Puerto Morelos

About a half and hour south of the Cancún Airport is the town of Puerto Morelos The town has not exploded like Cancún and Playa Del Carmen. It is still a quaint fishing village with boats for hire, street performers and quaint restaurants. There are no huge resorts but many quaint upscale condominiums and tourist hotels along a beautiful beach .

In the center of town is a community Catholic church which reflects the close relationship the people have with the sea and the fishing profession. It is small, quaint and uniquely Mexican

Modern Mayan Sculpture

For some reason there is a myth that some people believe that Mayans disappeared leaving this great culture they created. Like any indigenous people this is not true and they are still where they have always been.

Sure they have intermarried with other indigenous people and with their Spanish conquerers. However, like northern Native Americans they still live and they have not been cruelly displaced by the Mexican government. They live in the shadows of the temples and edifices they created a thousand years ago,

Like their ancestors, modern Mayans are also artists. This is an example of modern Mayan sculpture you can find at the Mayan Musuem in Cancún.

Yet Another Mexican Sunset

When I am in Mexico I am always on the lookout for a couple of things. Pelican images and sunsets or sunrises. I have so many great images of pelicans that I don’t publish them any more.

I need to still get the pelican money shot.I am trying to get one emerging from the water at sunset with a fish in his mouth. Until then, proably not too many pelican pictures.

However each sunset is unique and hard for me to resist sharing. Here is another one from this year’s trip.

Jardin Botanico Dr. Alfredo Barrera Marin

If you rent a car and drive about 45 minutes south of Cancún you will come to the wonderful little town of Puerto Morales. More on that in the future. Outside of the town off the highway is a hard to find botanical garden Jardin Botanico Dr. Alfredo Barrera Marin It is a fascinating visit and stroll through the Jungle.

It is not an easy hike, the ground is quite uneven in spots and you either have to cross a suspension bridge or hike up a steep hill. Well worth it though. There is allegedly a lot of wildlife but we only saw birds. Of course there were some ruins but also examples of how ancient Mayan’s lived. Inexpensive, uncrowded and very unique. Bring bug spray, it is the Jungle!

These grass roof structures were part of family living. There were three or four adjacent to each other. One had a chimney structure where the family cooked and ate, kind of a Mayan great room.Others were used for sleeping and storage. This is how the common people lived. In Tulum and Chichen Itsa you can see the ruins of stone dwellings were the rulers and elite lived.

All through the park there were examples of species survival as this little tree tries to grow out of a mangrove root.

Sunset at the Dock

I took this picture while this boat was at the dock. I couldn’t help but wonder how this would feel to see the sun going while at sea. No other boats around, no land in sight.

Would I feel anxious, peaceful, scared or happy. Probably all of the above making it a unique experience.

Cruising at Sunset

Next time w visit Mexico I have to figure out how to be this guy for a day. This is MY boat. I want this boat and I want to be at sea at sunset and sunrise for that matter. I am planning an ocean cruise but this is different. This boat is a personal yacht to only share with very close friends.

The Squirrels of Quintana Roo

During our second walk through the Jungle on this Mexican Odyssey my wife noted that we had never seen a squirrel in the Yucatan. I think she is right although I am no expert. What you do see, almost as much as you would see squirrels, are Iguanas

They are not nearly as annoying. They don’t run around like crazy irritating every dog on the planet. They don’t throw crap at you when you are setting up a tent. They have mystique because thanks to Ray Harryhausen we think of them as dinosaurs and for some reason we all love dinosaurs.

Tulum Wildflowers

These could be weeds for all I know but I found the colors to be striking especially against the rocks of ancient ruins. The ruins are in Tulum Mexico in the state of Quintanna Roo. I love visiting Mayan ruins in Mexico, it brings out my inner Indiana Jones.

Happy Hour

Everything in a resort is geared to get you to drink. One pool bar has happy hour from 3-4 PM, another from 4 to 6 PM. Happy hour at the “sunset docks” is from 5 to 7. This one taken at the famous :Ble Docks” in Cancún. The cocktails shimmer in the setting sun. Cheers!
