Backyard Buck
Today, old man winter fired a warning shot over over our bow. Sure today it was just a small flurry, but I’m not fooled. This is from the Halloween snow a couple of years ago. If you don’t like snow like me it’s time to flee!

Dancer in the Studio
I have published a few images that were created with “old school” image manipulation. My most popular is an old award winner called Row for Your Life. I studied the technique of Jerry Uelsmann and after a number of failures made these in my darkroom using the dodging and burning techniques perfected by Uelsmann. This one was printed during the same period and I scanned an old somewhat faded print to create the digital image. The pelican was shot in Lake Worth Florida, the beach is Cape Hatteras.

Atlantic City is fun at dawn. Most people are sleeping or still desperately gambling. You may see a runner or bike rider or someone out for a walk, but even in Summer the beach and boardwalk are relatively deserted. The morning is reserved for fisherman and gulls and an ocassional photographer like myself.

This sits atop the Revel Resort in Atlantic City. I know it changes color at night. A security guard told me that on Halloween it is a giant eye and that at Christmas it is a wreath. It looks like a giant golf ball to me. I put the giant gull in there just for fun, it is not a giant gull. If anyone knows what it is, please let me know!

As the time of year switches from Summer to Fall our mood seems to switch also. I have already seen my first Christmas ad and it is technically still Summer! People are planning their Halloween costumes and parties. Maybe the key to being a happier society is to live in the present! Summer Moon
OK, now this is a personal thing. I am a photographer, not an artist. I try to do artistic photography and be creative in my work but that does not make me an artist. Picasso was an artist, Monet was an artist, some of the students I taught photography to are artists. An artist starts with a blank canvas and from their minds they create an image. Artists believe that primary colors are red, blue, green and yellow. They teach this to children in grade school. Photographers use light. They understand that human beings have red, blue and green receptors (cones) in their eyes. There are no yellow cones in your eyes. Photographers understand that yellow along with cyan and magenta are subtractive primaries and the basics of printing ink or toner on paper.
It must be magical to have the skill to look at a piece of canvas and use a brush to paint an image. I tried it in school and I sucked. The only thing I have ever painted that I liked is this image. I used Doctor Martins Dyes and brushes to hand color a monochrome print. It took forever! I never tried hand tinting again and went back to the camera, darkroom and now lightroom where I belong. Hand Colored Junior Miss Contestants
I was in Central Park with family for a walk on Sunday Afternoon. I only had only lens, no tripod and had to keep up with my group. I wanted to take a picture of Central Park that captured the feeling of the place to me which was in constant movement. Bike riders, walkers,dogs, old people, young people; they were are there and all in motion. I set the exposure for 1/30th of a second and tried to hold it steady as I took a single step and stopped.
