Frank Zappa at Syria Mosque

I recently realized that a couple of years ago I offered for sale on my commercial site a t-shirt that said Frank Zappa at the Syria Masque. I sold a number of these T-Shirts and although not my best seller I was pleased that some people liked it. Recently it was pointed out to me that I had misspelled Syria Mosque. Not wanting to remove my previous item from sale, I created a new one with a different image and the correct venue.

Neighbors that Rock

In our life we have had some good luck with creative neighbors. In Montclair we lived next door to Janet Aldrich who was a musical comedy actress with a great voice. She actually borrowed our dog for a one month run in Anything Goes. Janet Shaw lived across the street. She was a set designer for many Woody Allen movies and when we knew her she worked on The Sopranos.

When we moved back to Pittsburgh we were excited to meet our new neighbors. We recently discovered that our neighbor across the street, Matt Aquiline was not only a musician but also a songwriter. I have always been fascinated by song writers. As a novelist I have enough problems just writing words let alone music to go with the words. To me music is a separate language and writing a song is like writing a poem in two different languages at the same time! We found out that he was performing at The Hard Rock Pittsburgh last night with his longtime singing partner Belen Pifel. It was a wonderful concert. His songs are filled with wit and passion and the harmonies were terrific. I have posted a couple of snaps from the show.

Candidate #15…Bass Hands

I am going to be posting images that I may have posted before with a candidate # thereby collecting a list of what I feel would be likely candidates to print for a gallery show of new images of only digital photography. This is of Chris Wood while performing with Medeski, Martin and Wood at the Sherman Theather in Stroudsburg Pennsylvania. Please feel free to leave comments if you agree or disagree about including them in a “best of” list.

Another Excerpt from Zombie Nights

Just one of the over forty images in my new book Zombie Nights. Zombie Nights is my story of the two nights I spent with the living dead. It is about my magazine assignment in 1978 to cover the making of George Romero’s Dawn of the Dead and includes over 40 behind the scene images. The brilliant cover design was created by Peter Johnson from The United Kingdom. In addition to being a fan, Peter is also a young brilliant artist. The book is now available from my publisher, CreateSpace and from Amazon world wide. To order your copy now, click here.

Jungle Drums

Jungle Drums above a popular cenote near Cancun Mexico. The young leopard drummer was one of three dancing and entertaining as the more fearless visitors walked down hundreds of stairs to swim in the denote and the rest of the more sane people watched the musical performance.

School Days

Stanley Clarke playing at the Stanley Theater in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania. The guitarist was Ray Gomez and was part of the School Days album tour in 1976. We recently saw him play with Return to Forever and he has not lost a lick. One of the best bass guitarists of all time.

Chris Wood

Chris Wood from Medeski,Martin and Wood is one of the world’s best bass players. During their current “acoustic tour” he played three different basses during the show. When he plays the “stand up”bass the instrument seems to become part of his body. Click here to see other images or by a print of this one.

The Keys Master

George Duke is an amazing piano and keyboard player. He played with Frank Zappa on Chunga’s Revenge, 200 Motels, WakawaJawaka, The Grand Wazoo, Apostrophe, Over-Nite Sensation, One Size Fits All, Bongo Fury and Roxy and Elsewhere. He has also played with other artists like Stanley Clarke and Jean Luc Ponty and has a successful and current career as a solo artist. The original photo for this digital creation was taken during a show with Frank Zappa on the Apostrophe Tour in Pittsburgh. You can buy a print on my commercial gallery by clicking here.
