Eagle Eye

For Valentines Day, my wife and I decided to visit our avian friends at The National Aviary. We love visiting every few weeks to see the progress of the babies and as members it costs us nothing to drop in. We got to see the baby penguins for the first time and they were very cute.

I thought the eagles in the aviary were bald eagles but they are actually Stellers Sea Eagles. Bigger than bald eagles but with the same colorations. They have a wingspan of up to 8.2 ft and are found primarily in Australia.

Life Finds Away

If you rent a car and drive about 45 minutes south of Cancún you will come to the wonderful little town of Puerto Morales. More on that in the future. Outside of the town off the highway is a hard to find botanical garden Jardin Botanico Dr. Alfredo Barrera Marin It is a fascinating visit and stroll through the Jungle.

It is not an easy hike, the ground is quite uneven in spots and you either have to cross a suspension bridge or hike up a steep hill. Well worth it though. There is allegedly a lot of wildlife but we only saw birds. Of course there were some ruins but also examples of how ancient Mayan’s lived. Inexpensive, uncrowded and very unique. Bring bug spray, it is the Jungle!

All through the park there were examples of species survival as this little tree tries to grow out of a mangrove root.

Cruising at Sunset

Next time w visit Mexico I have to figure out how to be this guy for a day. This is MY boat. I want this boat and I want to be at sea at sunset and sunrise for that matter. I am planning an ocean cruise but this is different. This boat is a personal yacht to only share with very close friends.

The Squirrels of Quintana Roo

During our second walk through the Jungle on this Mexican Odyssey my wife noted that we had never seen a squirrel in the Yucatan. I think she is right although I am no expert. What you do see, almost as much as you would see squirrels, are Iguanas

They are not nearly as annoying. They don’t run around like crazy irritating every dog on the planet. They don’t throw crap at you when you are setting up a tent. They have mystique because thanks to Ray Harryhausen we think of them as dinosaurs and for some reason we all love dinosaurs.

Tulum Wildflowers

These could be weeds for all I know but I found the colors to be striking especially against the rocks of ancient ruins. The ruins are in Tulum Mexico in the state of Quintanna Roo. I love visiting Mayan ruins in Mexico, it brings out my inner Indiana Jones.

Sunset at La Isla Dora

Our condo in Cancún is located on La Isla Dora on the Caribbean Sea. Across the street is a shopping center with a dock overlooking the lagoon. It is a perfect place to capture the sunset.

This Snow is On Me

Okay, yesterday I published Thinking of Mexico. Today we had our first snowfall in Pittsburgh and a little more than expected. So if you were stuck in traffic or fell on the ice…my bad. To make up for It I will share a winter picture from a few years ago. Hopefully, this will bring warmer weather?

Moment#14–The Wolves of Prague

This is the last week for our photo exhibition, Moments and Souls at the Percolate Gallery in Pittsburgh. I realize that many of you can not make it in to the gallery so over the next few weeks I will be publishing “the moments” that were my contribution to the show.

This image was taken in the center of Old Town in Prague. During a weekend market crowded with people, a man walks a wolf and two wolf dogs through the crowd.

Global Warming Cactus

We have had this Cactus for at least ten years. It use to bloom every December like clockwork. You know when it use to snow in December. Last few years it began to bloom around Thanksgiving. This year is the first year in bloomed in October. I figure if global warming continues it will soon be a Memorial Day Cactus.

Ressica Falls

Pennsylvania has so many waterfalls we have throw away waterfalls. You will stand in line to see Bushkill Falls, Dingman Falls and good luck getting close to Cucumber Falls in the summer. Ressica Falls is a throw away located in Pike county. They have Boy Scout Jamborees near there at the Cradle of Liberty and I am sure it is crowded then. However, most of the time there is nobody there.

I love the lip of the waterfall and how still the water is at the top.
