Flower with a Beard!

Each year Iris puts on a show and each year there are more and more in the garden so we divide them up and create other Iris pockets. They are usually called bearded iris because they seem to have a face with a beard. This was taken on a Nikon D3100 with a 50mm-300mm Nikon Lens at 240mm at f11 for 1/160th of a second at an ISO of 400. You can buy a print of this one by clicking here.

The Money Shot

I have published a few images of Neuschwanstein Castle on this blog and my commercial site. Unfortunately none of them are from the perfect angle. The best place to take a picture of this famous castle is from the middle of a wooden bridge. That is the money shot. Unfortunately when our tour got to the bridge it began to rain. This image was taken in the rain and so the sky is blah rather than blue and depth of field not as great as I would have liked. An hour earlier the sky looked like this but you can’t control the weather or in this case the tour guide..

Yesterday I posted an image taken along the road to Haleakala. The road is dramatic because you start at sea level and climb to over 10,000 feet. You start at beach weather and end in winter weather so you need to be prepared. Once you finally make it to the top of Haleakala you are rewarded with one of the great views on planet Earth.

To me it looks like I imagine the mountains on the moon look and not surprisingly the moon astronauts trained there. One minute it is foggy and you can’t even see the crater and the next voila! The place is just magical and if you are brave you can even ride on horseback through parts of the crater.

The Road to Haleakala

A must see destination in Maui is Haleakala which is an inactive volcano at the island’s center. Most visitors get up in the middle of the night to see the sunrise over the crater. If you do that however you miss another wonderful sight. This is west Maui in the morning sun.

Boat and Clouds

The one thing you can be sure of when visiting Maui is that it will rain every day. However, Lahaina is on the “desert” side of the island and gets less rain than the interior or the south and east sides of the island. Still it will rain. The good news is that because of the prevailing trade winds it is rare to get anything more than a short shower or thunder storm and ten minutes later the sun comes out and it’s pool or beach time.

This picture was taken from a boat out of Lahaina before a short and cooling shower.

Motif #1

This is the harbor at Rockport Massachusetts. I took this photo early in my career on a frigid November day while my family waited in a restaurant on the pier where later I had some fantastic clam chowder. Years later I discovered this scene is commonly called Motif #1 because it is one of the most photographed and painted scenes in the world. Art teachers assign this to teach students about painting light, color and vistas. Who knew?

Bavaria–The Alps

I live on a mountain. I have also traveled a lot through different mountain ranges in Colorado,California,Utah,New Mexico,Maine,Canada,Pennsylvania,North Carolina etc. It is amazing how different mountains can look and yet so similar at the same time. A mountain in Pennyslvania and one in Tennessee can look very much alike but you wouldn’t confuse them with the Rockies.

These are the Alps in Germany near the Austrian border. I don’t think these look like any other mountains I have seen but can’t say what it is that makes them look so different. I have never been to the Canadian but this doesn’t look like Colorado to me.

The Pigeons of The Cathedral Santa Maria Nascente

In the plaza outside the The Cathedral Santa Maria Nascente in Milan the Pigeons gather just as they do outside other great cathedrals around the world. I wonder if Pigeons are Catholic? I myself have never been one to feed pigeons. I don’t think they need any survival help from me. However photographing this family was fun. I love the different expressions; the thrill of the young girl, the calmness of the father, the trying to be cool teen and the wonder of the boy are all in this single image.

Monet’s House at Giverny

The Gardens at Giverny are so lush that unless you are on the main path it is easy to loose sight of the house. This is a view of the house from The Water Garden and you can only see the top floor.

In Flight

I think most people as children want to be able to fly. We dream about it and some actually jump out of airplanes and off cliffs with the appropriate equipment just to be able to simulate the experience of flight. As a photographer capturing birds in flight has been a goal for decades and I have captured a few. However many times the sky is boring behind the bird so this time I just replaced the sky with one I like better.
