The Fort Pitt Museum is at the site of the old Fort Pitt Blockhouse at the confluence of the Ohio River. The Fort is outlined b a concrete path, only the block house remains. Some of the original artillery is still functional. Periodically they fire the big canon and the presentation is fun and LOUD!

Lighting The Fort Pitt Cannon
On Saturday we witnessed our first Flugtag which was held at The Pittsburgh Regatta for the first time. Flugtag means flight time in German.
It is an event event organized by Red Bull in which competitors attempt to fly home-made, human-powered flying machines. They are size-limited to around 133 feet and weight-limited to approximately 330 lb. A team of four pushes the pilot and vessel off a pier and in Pittsburgh over the Allegheny River. Well actually into the river because most of these flying machines rarely fly at all.
The world record for the longest flight is 258 feet. In the Pittsburgh wind yesterday the longest flight was 121 feet. The event raises a lot of money for charities around the world and it is a hoot to watch. Each team does a silly performance before their flight and crafts are designed with the area in mind. Yesterday there was a Pirogi Plane, a Flying Kielbasa and Mr Rodgers themed craft.

I have seen Béla Fleck perform many times. Arguably the best Bluegrass banjo player of all time. I saw him perform a duet with Bruce Hornsby which was an amazing concert. However when you see him play with the Flecktones you get to to see the jazz and improvisational music of four exceptional musicians. In addition to Béla Fleck, there is Victor Wooten who is one of the top bass players in the world. The group is rounded out by Futureman (Roy Wooten) on drums and Howard Levy on harmonica and keyboards.
Last Wednesday we saw them play at The Carnegie Music Hall of Homestead in the first appearance this year. This was my seventh time seeing them and as always they were amazing and their music mesmerizing. Four days later and I am still humming their tunes. A couple of snaps from the show.

I was roaming the street in Bisbee Arizona waiting for my better half to emerge from a pottery shop. We were deep in the heart of Cochise County not far from Mexico. But Still there is always time to shop and therefore time for me to roam the streets.
I met this guy and he gave me an idea for a whole new photo series, Brothers of the Brush. Of course I have done nothing else to make it a series. I have not even photographed my son in law who has a magnificent beard.Not even a self portrait for a man who has had a beard for over 40 years. However if I do create a series it will be because of this guy, deep in the heart of Cochise County.

Bothers of the Brush
The National Aviary is America’s only independent indoor nonprofit zoo dedicated exclusively to birds. Located in West Park on Pittsburgh’s historic North Side, the National Aviary’s diverse collection comprises more than 500 birds representing more than 150 species from around the world, many of them threatened or endangered in the wild.
Right now you can see a special treat at the Aviary. Each morning they bring out the Baby Flamingos to meet the public. Maybe not quite as exciting as the baby elephant at the Zoo but they are awfully cute little creatures and learning how to walk.

There is no place in the United States that knows how to celebrate American holidays better than New England. Since I have family there, I always spend Thanksgiving there and sometimes the 4th of July as well. A few years ago I went with my family to the Sudbury Massachusetts Independence Day parade. This summer is special at the Phipps Conservatory because there is a special exhibition of the fine art glass sculptures of Jason Gamrath.There are always a few glass sculptures in the eight rooms of the conservatory but this year the exhibition adds over 80 works from the brilliant young artist. Each room is dramatically changed by the addition of his artwork. The show is not to be missed and runs throughout the summer.

Trying to avoid politics at all cost on Father’s Day we watched The Grateful Dead Movie which I haven’t scene for a long time. I was taken by one scene when during a sound check Phil was talking to a cameraman. He became aware that the camera was causing feedback. He looked like a little kid as he made the camera move closer and farther to play with the feedback. They seemed so happy when they played back then.

I know Father’s Day is a uniquely American holiday probably created by the greeting card companies or Craftsman tools. But fathers are important in the development of societal norms and in fostering the growth of children. We don’t go through the pain and sacrifice that mothers do and for that reason are sometimes overlooked as being important in a child’s development. However children need two parents and I salute all fathers today who have stayed with their family and provided protection,sustenance and leadership for their children and love them in spite of their flaws.
