Sunset in Paradise
On Saturday we are venturing to Quintana Roo and our Westin Condo at Lagunamar in Cancun for a week of fun in the sun. We have never been there before. People have told me that the white sand beaches at Cancun and Islas Mujeres are the best in the world. After all it is where the Movie “Ten” was shot and all men my age can still see Bo Derreck’s slow motion trek across the sand in their mind’s eye. We shall see. This is Ka’anapali Beach in Maui County in the State of Hawaii and still my favorite white sand beach. We shall see.

Ka’anapai Beach
My wife and I visited San Francisco and Monterrey California for our twentieth anniversary. A few years later we took our daughter there for a visit on the way to Los Angeles. We had told our daughter about all the Seals we had seen in San Francisco but of course when we got there the seals were not where we had left them six years earlier. The park official in San Francisco told us they were gone from the area and migrating to the channel islands. We were disappointed. A few days later after getting to Monterrey Califronia we were walking towards the aquarium and we smelled them before we saw them. They were all over the harbor, hundreds maybe thousands of Seals. They bark like dogs and fight and play like dogs but smell of the sea! I took this image while we watched them off the pier.

Dog Fight
The world is full of beautiful vistas but it is hard to imagine a place more beautiful than Big Sur. The road twists and turns between Carmel and San Luis Opbispo and each turn reveals a new and stunning vista. It is hard not to stop every mile or so just to take in the view. The first time I visited was in 1968 and when I went back ten years later it seemed to not have changed, rugged wild and beautiful. You can buy a print of this image by clicking here.

Big Sur
Driving the Hana Highway is a once in the lifetime experience, well at least I won’t do it again. I hate driving close to the edge of narrow roads without guard rails but fortunately my wife doesn’t and we got to take this wonderful drive. If you stop to look at every waterfall along the way it will take you all day. If I were to drive it again, I would definitely get a hotel or Inn and not drive back until the next day. Maui has two great drives in addition to this one. The scenic road to Haleakala and Route 340 on the West side which is my personal favorite.

On the Road to Hana
Between December and March, the Humpback Whales travel to Maui from Alaskan waters to breed. You can purchase all sorts of different whale watching trips during this period. You will probably see a whale, they are everywhere but mostly you see them underwater. They don’t jump out of the water as much as you may think by watching TV nature shows. You are pretty much guaranteed to see Spinner Dolphins that live in the waters year around. Unlike the whales they love to leap out of the water and perform. Atlantic City is fun at dawn. Most people are sleeping or still desperately gambling. You may see a runner or bike rider or someone out for a walk, but even in Summer the beach and boardwalk are relatively deserted. The morning is reserved for fisherman and gulls and an ocassional photographer like myself.

A long time ago we camped at Digby Neck on the Bay of Fundy in Nova Scotia. The trip marked a lot of firsts for us; the first time we saw the northern lights, the first time I ate Digby Chicken which is a giant scallops grilled and served on a hamburger bun and also the first time we saw the highest tides in the world. We went swimming in the frigid bay in the afternoon and the boats at this dock were all on a ramp some 30 feet below the dock. This is the same dock at high tide. OK, this is the most stupid sign I have seen in a while. I mean c’mon man we don’t need a sign to tell us where the ocean is. Put up a 20 foot long burger or something; what a waste of ad space. And while I am ranting, this is for you Donald Trump, “Your hotels are dumps!” You couldn’t pay enough to stay at Dump Taj Mahal, god what a slash at India.
