Pittsburgh Air: Beautiful but Deadly

When I was a child I was tested for allergies. I was positive for tree pollen, dust, dander, ozone ragweed and mold. I didn’t realize it at the time but it meant I was generally fucked for the rest of my life.

Due to the warming of the planet, every year becomes worse for allergy and asthma sufferers. Recently there was a video of a pollen bomb in South Carolina. Maybe we haven’t had a pollen bomb in Pittsburgh but we certainly have a lot of pollen hand grenades like this one in my neighborhood.

Yesterday The Pittsburgh Post Gazzette published that Pittsburgh once again received an or F from The American Lung Association.
I love the Spring but am happy when the tree pollen is over.

Walking the Dog in Regent Square

A couple of years ago we got a new dog, the seventh in our life as a couple. We thought it would help us as seniors to make sure we walked every day. Our dog Trey, is a joy but has more energy than any dog I have ever had. Unfortunately as a rescue she is not fully socialized yet to other dogs but improving. so the dog park is out for now.

We found her sweet spot to be between four or five miles a day. Fortunately we live in one of Pittsburgh’s great neighborhoods and we border Frick Park so our walks can be a strenuous or easy as we like. I have started to use my phone to capture images from our morning walks. Took this one today and it made me smile and thought it was worth sharing.

Halloween in Regent Square Part 3

This is the third in a series of my neighborhood at Halloween. There is no doubt that a friendly competition exists between some of the houses in the Square. This house though is always the house to beat. First of all it is without any decoration a beautiful house. I understand that the owner teaches design at a Pittsburgh University which clearly provides an advantage. I talked to this lady working on the man in black and she told me this year’s theme was the tooth fairy in search of a mate.

I plan to do some video of these houses at night and this one will be at the top of the list so stay tuned.

Halloween in Regent Square Part2

Regent Square is a great family neighborhood in Pittsburgh where we make our home. Its great year round. Spring brings beautiful gardens and magnificent trees. Summer means block parties and The Run Around The Square. But fall brings Halloween and I have never lived in a community that embraces this holiday so fully.

I am continuing to scout the neighborhood thinking I might have to do a video to really capture the scene. Here are a couple of more from this week.

Pittsburgh Day Lily 2018

Each year I try to publish images of the best blooms form our garden in Regent Square. Somehow, this one fell through the cracks. So even though the bloom is long gone, we can still enjoy its vibrant color.

Run Around The Square 2018

Tomorrow is race day in my neighborhood. Its time for Run Around The Square. Its actually two races in one.

The first race is a 1.5 mile fun run through our neighborhood. People can enter with their dogs and children. The second race is through the neighborhood and through Frick Park ending in Fern Hollow. At the end there are free hot dogs and beer. Along the route there are at least ten musical entertainers. Its a fun event for everyone.

Regent Square Theater

When we returned to Pittsburgh three years ago we were excited about our new neighborhood. It was great when we left in 1978 and since returning it continues to get better in every way. We were excited that the Regent Square Theater was still here.

We went to see a couple of films and walking up to the theater was fun but inside the theater had deteriorated. Then the theater closed for a while and the whole neighborhood was sad. It was closed for a long time and we thought its absence would change our area. Then to our joy we found out that they were finding funds to refurbish it.

Last night was our first night back to The the theater. We went to see The Mads from Mystery Science Theater 3000. The Pittsburgh Filmakers had promised live events and we had great fun watching a terrible movie with the Mads. We laughed like crazy and enjoyed the improved projection system and comfortable seats. Way to go Pittsburgh Filmmakers! Thanks for giving our neighborhood our Theather back.

Our Pittsburgh Garden– White Iris

White flowers are the hardest to photograph. Iris especially are difficult because they reflect so much light but are thin enough to also refract a fair amount of light and light therefore transmits through the leaves.

To compensate for this, you must use a tripod so that you can use a low ISO setting and achieve enough depth of field to capture the transmitted light as well as the reflected light. During editing in post production it will be necessary to reduce the highlights by at least one and a half f-stops to be able to see the texture of the bloom in the white area.

Our Pittsburgh Garden– Purple Iris

Regent Square is overrun with rabbits. Fortunately our dog raises the alarm
every time she spots one. However she is in an enclosed area and can’t lay chase. I can’t use my pellet gun like I did when we lived in the mountains so we try to control them with dried blood and pepper spray.

The have destroyed most of our tulips and some other flowers but they don’t like daffodils and they don’t eat Iris. I expect we will be adding more Iris in the future. This purple beauty is in our front garden.
