A Missing Moment…Jumping Bean

When assembling images for our show, “Moments and Souls” I forgot to include this one. If we ever decide to publish a book I will have to include it. It is a perfect moment captured in front of the Cloud Gate sculpture in Chicago’s Millennium Park. The sculpture is affectionately called The Bean by Second City residents.

This young lady placed a lot of trust in the crowd as she jumped from her boyfriend’s shoulders into their waiting arms.

Art Deco Masterpiece

My daughter asked me to find a suitable image for a site she is working on involving the city of Chicago. I sent her some images and once again was struck with the beauty of this building which is symbolic of the Second City.

When ground was broken for the Wrigley Building in 1920, there were no major office buildings north of the Chicago River. The Michigan Avenue Bridge was still under construction. Today this magnificent architectural structure is a symbol of the great city of Chicago and a National Landmark. It is a true art deco masterpiece and rivals the Empire State Building in New York as a symbol of that style.

Cathedral of Learning April 10,2019

April 10 is my birthday and one of the ways we celebrated was by going to see The Spring Flower Show at The Phipps Conservatory. It was such a beautiful day I didn’t want to go inside. A shot of the Cathedral of Learning form the walkway leading into the Phipps.

Saint Vitus Cathedral Prague

Saint Vitus Cathedral in Prague Czech Republic is a very important Cathedral in Roman Catholicism. It is located within the Prague Castle Complex which is a collection of ancient buildings dating back to the tenth century. At the time Prague was the seat of The Holy Roman Empire.

It is a be example of Romanesque architecture with awe inspiring stained glass and statues inside and outside the Cathedral.

Strolling The Charles Bridge

The Charles Bridge is one of the most famous landmarks of Prague. We were in Prague for five days and The Charles Bridge was always crowded. I am sure early in the morning it is not as crowded and less crowded on week days. However it is like the Ponte Vecchio of Praha (Prague) and if you were there you wouldn’t miss it. It is a pedestrian bridge and connects the old city with the Prague Castle area.

When returning from Prague I posted a scenic view of the bridge from the Castle. However strolling along the bridge is a unique experience. There are 30 statues mounted to the balustrade of Charles Bridge in Prague. They form two rows, one on each side. It is crowded with people musicians and vendors.

Phipps Conservatory Roof Reflections

One of the most wonderful things about the Phipps Conservatory is the construction of the many roofs. The entry is special and beautiful but the real art is in the computer control of the windows, fans and louvers. This allows them to create different habitats for different exhibits in every season.

The reflection of the roof in the pond is a reminder of how the roof and passive solar environment allow this room to be used in all seasons. Even winter.

Behold The Bilateral Symmetry

When our daughter was around 8 years old my wife took her to The Phipps Conservatory with her grandmother. When they got to this room my daughter proclaimed, “…behold the bilateral symmetry.” It is impossible for me not to think of that each time I visit.

Rhine Castle Revisited

This time of year I like to revisit old images and sometimes edit them with newer tools. This image was taken from the deck of The Viking Longship HILN as we cruised the Rhine River Gorge, Most of the images I took were worthless because the movement of the ship was so fast that the images would blur. For this one however for some reason the ship slowed dramatically and I was able to take a clear shot.

I reedited this using the NIK color tools and adjusted the color and exposure to make the clouds and sky stand out.

The Cathedral in Autumn

We live in Regent Square so we see this building regularly. It is easy to take it for granted. The Cathedral of Learning, is a Pittsburgh landmark and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. A gray day with a splash of color adds to the Cathedral’s magic.

It is 42 stories high and was construction was finished in 1934 although classes were first held their in 1931. It is the second tallest gothic style building in the world that is not a church. A proud symbol of the University of Pittsburgh and the city it represents.
