Missing Frank Zappa-Syria Mosque 1974

I only saw Zappa play once. It was at the Syria Mosque in 1974 with Sal Valquez, Jean Luc Ponty and the Tower of Power Horns. Truly one of the best shows I ever saw. I miss Zappa and still listen to his music and that of his son.

The Birdman of Pittsburgh-Revisited

I have been editing some old images with my new editing tools and in some cases improving the quality. I originally published this in 2012. It is one of a series of images I took of this gent who you would see around Market Square in Pittsburgh. I would take my photography classes form the Ivy School of Professional Art on field trips to Market Square.

Every day he was there feeding the pigeons and some other gents were sitting at a table playing chess. The square had changed a lot but the chess players are still there and so are the pigeons.

Remembering Don Van Vliet aka Captain Beefheart

Th first concert I ever photographed was Captain Beefheart and his Magic Band. They played at the Syria Mosque on October 15, 1972. Security was a lot loser back then I was able to get back stage and take a series of images from the wings before I got booted.

I miss those days and fondly remember the Captain standing next to me while the band played. He looked over at me and we exchanged nods and then he made his big entrance in that blue cape. It is a fond memory and I still listen to his music. Rock on Captain, we miss you brother.

I have edited this image using a new set of tools and like this version better is has more clarity and contrast.

Really Volkswagen? You have time for this?

I have thousands of products for sale on my commercial site. I have only received two complaints for copyright violation. The first came from the Jerry Garcia Family Trust a couple of years ago. We agreed that I could continue to sell prints, cards and posters of my concert images if I removed all the apparel products from my site. I understood their objection and I complied.

The second came today from Volkswagen. That’s right Volkswagen, the maker of German tanks for the Nazi’s. Yes, that Volkswagen. You know, the one that recently confessed to falsifying mileage data over the last ten years. My first new car was a VW Bug. I bought it in 1969 for $1969. It lasted ten years but I sold it when the bottom began to rust. That was before undercoating. We the bought a red VW Rabbit and after the third warrantied clutch replacement, traded it in. We have looked at VW’s since but dislike their rough ride and feel.

It wasn’t a special image but was one of the first animal pictures I ever took and quite frankly it is not that good. It has been on the site for ten years and has never garnered a sale. Now I understand why Red Bubble had to remove this image. I don’t fault them. I probably would have removed it in my next purge of products on my storefront. But really Volkswagen you have time for this?

Have Harp Will Travel

One of the things I love about traveling in different parts of the world are the variety of street performers. In Prague they have pianos scattered around the city in public places with signs that say play me. In Paris we saw a string quartet. In Germany we saw organ grinders. In San Francisco we saw someone playing the Chapman stick.

Of course guitars, fiddles and singers are common everywhere. However In Puerto Morelos I saw a new one for the first time. We were leaving when we passed this man heading towards the sqaure. Kinda of sorry I didn’t stay around to heard him play.

Modern Mayan Sculpture

For some reason there is a myth that some people believe that Mayans disappeared leaving this great culture they created. Like any indigenous people this is not true and they are still where they have always been.

Sure they have intermarried with other indigenous people and with their Spanish conquerers. However, like northern Native Americans they still live and they have not been cruelly displaced by the Mexican government. They live in the shadows of the temples and edifices they created a thousand years ago,

Like their ancestors, modern Mayans are also artists. This is an example of modern Mayan sculpture you can find at the Mayan Musuem in Cancún.

Happy Hour

Everything in a resort is geared to get you to drink. One pool bar has happy hour from 3-4 PM, another from 4 to 6 PM. Happy hour at the “sunset docks” is from 5 to 7. This one taken at the famous :Ble Docks” in Cancún. The cocktails shimmer in the setting sun. Cheers!

Las Damas Después del Trabajo

Around 4 pm in the afternoon these women were waiting for a van pickup back to their hometown after their work day ended. The difference in their reactions to me was astounding. Shot in La Isla shopping center on La Isla Dora.
