Montmartre in Paris

last year was my third visit to Paris France. I had never made it to Montmartre and was excited to see the Basilica. I wasn’t concerned about the hills, heck I am from Pittsburgh. When we exited the metro station at Abbesse we had no idea about the steps. There were no escalators but rather some large metal elevator door with hordes of people so we started up the steps when we were almost exhausted we saw a sign that said 100 more steps to the top and we looked at each other and laughed. Later after we had handled the steps and climbed almost to the top of the hill I took this image of a typical Montmartre street which you can purchase by clicking here.

Castle in the Trees

Neuschwanstein Castle in Bavaria Germany is the castle that Disney models for the centerpiece of their amusement parks. Bandelier National Monument

Near Los Alamos New Mexico is a great American national treasure, Bandelier National Monument. The place is much like it was when Native Americans lived there and not far from some reservations where native Americans still live in the style of their grandfathers. A great place to hike and see the natural treasures of the area where you can visualize the life style of three hundred years ago. Sunny Summer Sunflowers

Nothing means summer more to me than seeing sunflowers in bloom. Sunflowers are right up there with boston coolers, watermelon and ball games. These are Canadian sunflowers that I captured wile visiting the Jardin botanique de Montréal which is a wonderful place to visit while in Montréal. Life Finds a Way

I am always amazed when I visit the desert as to how much life there is. I have seen the dessert in New Mexico and Arizona in bloom years ago but even in the dry times there is life. When we visited Indian Canyons in Palm Springs we followed a little spring and watched the signs of life along it’s boundaries. Old School Montréal

Québec has two major cities, Québec (City) and Montréal. When we first visited the provence of Québec, we went to Québec city because we wanted to see old French Canada. We then traveled to Montréal specifically to see the Jazz festival and we stayed in a modern high rise hotel. To our surprise, Montréal also has a wonderful old city which rivals Québec in history and European flavor. Firenze Italia

Italy has a lot of beautiful cities but Firenze (Florence) is certainly one of the best jewels on the necklace. What makes it so special is it’s location in the mountains along the Arno river and its history of being the centre of Italian culture for so long. When your city can boast bridges built by Michelangelo, you know it is special. This is a view of the city from a park just outside taken during a brief rain shower. A Windmill in Paris

If someone would have told me there was a windmill in the center of Paris, I would have doubted them. Silly me because as we climbed the hill on Montmartre, there it was. Parish Church in Montmartre

Many people may hustle right by this beautiful old church on their way to see the The Basilique Sacré-Coeur. This beautiful historic building is near the Abbesses Metro Stop in Montmartre. It is a very accessible church unlike some of the Cathedrals in Paris. There is no list of rules, just come on in, take pictures, pray, sit in solitude in an ancient building without hordes of tourists take pictures on their phones. Begin the Beguine

I first learned about Beguines when I began to travel to Belgium in the early the late 1980’s. My only previous reference point was my father singing Cole Porter’s “Begin the Beguine” when I was a kid. The Beguines were a religious order of the Catholic Church that focused on healing the sick and wounded. In 1776, the City of Bruges dedicated a new “Beguine House” and Chapel near the town center. It is beautiful, quiet and pristine place to visit while touring the city. Many Americans are drawn to the entry gate since the dedication date is also the date of our nation’s birth.
