OK, can’t think a better way to start the day than a pre dawn walk on the beach and watching the sunrise from a hot tub. The scene at the Westin Laguna Mar in Mexico.

The Templo del Alacran is located adjacent to The Westin Lagunamar Ocean Resort atop Cancún’s highest peak. It is not much of a peak but one of the few cliffs in Cancún that looks out toward the Caribbean Sea. It is also known as the Scorpion’s Temple. Scorpions are a special animal in the Mayan culture. It is believed that this ruin may have been a lighthouse for the city of Tulum although it may have predated the existence of Tulum. This picture was taken at sunrise.

After visiting Tulum, we went to a lovely beach on the Riviera Maya called La Playa Parariso. The sand was pure white and the reef that runs for 70 miles along the coast offers gentle waves and warm waters. There was a nice little beach club offering drinks and traditional Mexican fare. I can’t wait to go back.

Tulum is the last Mayan city constructed before the Spanish invasion and conquest of Mexico. It was constructed on the east coast of the Yucatán Peninsula on the Caribbean Sea in what is now the Mexican state of Quintana Roo. The city was constructed along the cliffs overlooking the Caribbean and served as a port for other Mayan cities like Coba which was the de facto capital of the Mayan Empire. The ruins are fun to visit because afterwards you can swim in the mild Caribbean waters sheltered by a large reef providing gentle waves and pure white sand.

If you follow this blog you have come to realize that I love pelicans. I photograph them whenever I can and even offer pelican apparel on my commercial site. Yet as many as I have photographed, I have still not captured the “money shot”. The shot that I visualize is a pelican rising out of the water with a fish in his mouth. I guess I have to keep taking pictures of them. This one was captured in a dive at sunrise from the beach at Laguna Mar in Cancun.

Sunrises and sunsets are magic. Not just for photography either, there seems to be a special aura and energy that happens at this time of day. I think that sunsets on the beach or on a boat are real amazing life events. This one is from a boat on the lagoon side of Cancun.

We sat having lunch at Tacos and Tequila on the Blue Dock in Cancun enjoying tostadas and beer. The taco bowl that contained the fresh made guacamole was amazingly fresh and then I noticed the reason why. She could make these without looking and was positioned right in the front of the restaurant so people walking by could observe her skill. She was quiet and focused as she looked at the tourists walking by and every 30 to 45 seconds made another fresh taco shell.

I can not see an iguana without thinking of the character that Tim Kazurinsky created on Saturday Night Live in the 1980’s. There are Iguanas all over Mexico. We had one near our condo which we named Iggy Pop for some unknown reason. We found this gal in ruins of Tulum Mexico. I found out that the females are smooth like this and the males have spikes along their spine.
