Patterns

This weeks theme will be patterns. Photographers, including myself, are fascinated with patterns. I think that is because, unlike painters, we deal with physically moving our position and the position of our tools (tripod, lens, etc.)to compose an image. Of course there are patterns in everything, but this weeks images will focus on images that I like primarily because of their repetitive patterns. This one was taken along the Chicago river on the Architectural tour. You can see other images and buy prints of this one at my commercial gallery.

Summer Fun

Labor Day weekend usually signifies the end of Summer. Once again, the kids are back in school and traffic and schedules for everyone become more rigid because of it. Even if you don’t have children, you don’t want to get caught behind “the late bus” climbing up the mountain on a two lane road. So here is a video highlighting some fun we had this Summer. Don’t Wanna Discuss it!

I said earlier this week that a Photographer had to give themselves permission to observe people. My wife said this shot was intruding and, yes it is but it honestly captures a moment of human expression. As a photojournalist your image should capture a decisive moment, a human expression or a moment of action. That is the way Henri Cartier Bresson teaches and who can argue with that?
This one is not for sale but you can see other images and buy prints and apparel at my commercial gallery.

Face of Chicago-2

Earlier this week I published Face of Chicago-1 and felt I had a few other shots to share from my recent visit to the Windy City. I will have to go through the archives because I am sure I have enough from previous trips to create a short photo essay. So here are a few more from the most recent trip, none are for sale but you can see others and buy apparel and prints on my commercial site.

Chicago Mounties?

I never did get an answer as to who are these people? I took this picture years ago near Michigan Ave and the Water Tower. I have never seen them since. I don’t think they are mounted police and there wasn’t anything special going on in the city when we were there for the Print Show at McCormick place. So who are these people and why are they dressed like colonial soldiers? If you want to see other images from my Chicago gallery , click here.

Chinatown Chicago?

Most visitors think of Chicago as an ethnic melting pot. A stew of irish,Italian, hispanic,Russian,Polish and Chinese? Really? Chinese? There is a large ethnic Chinese neighborhood in Chicago located on the South Side, centered on Cermak and Wentworth Avenues, and is an example of an American Chinatown. OK, it’s not as big as the ones in New York, San Francisco or Seattle but has essentially the same stuff; authentic restaurants, dojos, food stores and shops selling everything from crap to high end objects d’art and jewelry. You can see more images from Chicago and buy prints at my commercial gallery.

Chicago’s Millenium Park

Millennium Park is located in the Chicago Loop and best known for it’s world famous structure called Cloud Gate (The Bean). However scattered through the park are other sculptures. The one designed by Frank Geary is not only art but functions as an acoustic band shell for the outdoor amphitheater and concert venue. You can bu a print of this one and see others at my Commercial Gallery.

A Face in the Crowd

Millenium Park in Chicago is a wonderful park known for the Cloud Gate Sculpture or as locals call it, The Bean. Next to The Bean is a small plaza featuring two gigantic talking heads having a discussion. I have to go back at night. See other pictures from around the world at my commercial site.

Back to Chicago

We are Headed off tomorrow to see our family in Chicago. Yesterday, I was converting old videos and found this piece of nonsense which was shot in Chicago but has little to do with the great city or my family. It is a little surreal which is probably while I like it. Please let me know your thoughts and I will be back with more in about a week. Have a great Easter and Passover to everybody!

The Chicago El

Although natives might complain about it, the Chicago Transit Authority runs the best metro rail service in the United States. Yes I know DC has a good one but it is a fraction of the size compared to Chicago. Chicago lines are usually on time, relatively clean, free of graffiti and also still moderately priced. This is a picture of an elevated train running parallel to the Chicago River. You can buy a print of this one and see other images on my commercial site by clicking here.
