Friend or Foe?

When we first moved to the Pocono Mountains we would see all the deer and get real excited. Aren’t they pretty? Isn’t nature wonderful?
Our real estate agent laughed and told us that within five years we would think of them as pests. He was wrong, It only took three years. We saw the impacts of deer wasting disease and eventually our community had to vote for a deer cull. There was no hunting in our community and the deer population was unhealthy.

For the last three years we have been wintering in Florida and I love to watch birds in flight, especially large birds like pelicans. People who live there hate them, especially fisherman. They steal bait, steal the catch, poop all over their boats and stalk them well out to sea. Here is a small group pestering a fisherman in a bay near Captiva island Florida.

Scenic Views Candidate #6…Lettuce Lake

I am going to be posting images that I may have posted before with a candidate # thereby collecting a list of what I feel would be likely candidates to print for a gallery show of new images of only digital photography. Right now I am reviewing images that are scenic or from nature. This is a monochrome view of Lettuce Lake State Park in Tampa taken during February 2015. It was a cloudy gray day and for a couple of hours I could only really see in shades of grey.

Rider Reimagined

I took this picture years ago. It is motion pan of a fashioned model that I worked with. After we did the fashion shots we went to her barn where she kept this beautiful horse and she went on a trail ride. I only had one chance to capture the motion pan. I set up in a meadow with my camera on a tripod and when I was ready I waved at her and she began her ride, I had always like this shot so I recently edited the image using NIK tools and used a vignette which may or may not have improved it. Your opinion?

Horses Near Il Duomo

I took this picture in 2011 outside the Cathedral Santa Maria Nascente in Milan Italy. We had just left the Cathedral and this installation was in front of a museum in the square. It was about two million degrees and we hadn’t eaten at all and never did see the musuem. I never did find out anything about these sculptures and not sure if it was a temporary or permanent display.

I never did publish the image. It was taken at noon and I tried to do some masking and editing but could never get the detail I wanted. I decided to use some of the NIK collection tools on the image and finally got it to the point where I can share it. It was a stark contrast to the medieval architecture of Il Duomo.

The Observatory at Chichén Itzá… Redux

Most people visiting Chichén Itzá are elated to see the large Pyramids and the Ball Court. As you are walking through you gain an appreciation for the wonderful Mayan culture that seemed so civilized and yet so brutal. It reminds me of our USA culture. However, the observatory really impressed me. To think that this ancient culture was also mapping stars and comets was a little surprising. Yet Mammoths and Saber Tooth Tigers still existed when the Mayan culture was flourishing.

This image is an edit of an earlier post using Google’s NIK editing tools.

Hohenschwangau Castle Redux

The fortress Schwangau is mentioned in historical records dating from the 12th Century. It stood high up on a rock on the site of the present 19th-century Neuschwanstein castle. Hohenschwangau castle was first mentioned in 1397 and stands on a hill below Neuschwanstein. This photograph of Hohenschwangau was taken from the balcony in the front of Neuschwanstein. The original was taken in the summer of 2011. I recently edited the image using tools from the Nik Collection and found the edited version to be outstanding. You can compare the two below. Let me know which one you like better.

Morning Run

When I travel it is easy to take sunset pictures. I am out and about, alert, in the zone and ready for the light show. However, it has always been difficult for me to take sunrise pictures. I could blame it on my age but that would not be true. To take a sunrise picture you have to get up and to your location before the sun rises.

I love to walk (I use to run) in the morning after I have had my morning coffee. The morning is one of my favorite times of day. But then there is this guy. What time did he get up and start running? Who are the people that can do this? Are they human? It was dark when I got to the beach and I saw him run down the beach. This was taken about a half hour later as he ran back up the beach. He must be and A type!

Photographed at sunrise on a beach near Cancún.
