Window with A View

Most of the time when you travel and stay in hotels near the highway you get your choice of view. You can view the front parking lot or rear parking lot. As a Marriott Gold Elite member I almost always get upgraded. This time it was with it.

This is the view from the Aloft in Lexington Massachusetts. We saw a variety of animals and birds during pour stay and still had the convenience of being close to the highway.

A Missing Moment…Jumping Bean

When assembling images for our show, “Moments and Souls” I forgot to include this one. If we ever decide to publish a book I will have to include it. It is a perfect moment captured in front of the Cloud Gate sculpture in Chicago’s Millennium Park. The sculpture is affectionately called The Bean by Second City residents.

This young lady placed a lot of trust in the crowd as she jumped from her boyfriend’s shoulders into their waiting arms.

Art Deco Masterpiece

My daughter asked me to find a suitable image for a site she is working on involving the city of Chicago. I sent her some images and once again was struck with the beauty of this building which is symbolic of the Second City.

When ground was broken for the Wrigley Building in 1920, there were no major office buildings north of the Chicago River. The Michigan Avenue Bridge was still under construction. Today this magnificent architectural structure is a symbol of the great city of Chicago and a National Landmark. It is a true art deco masterpiece and rivals the Empire State Building in New York as a symbol of that style.

Anne Fankhuis Removed By RedBubble

I was notified this week by RedBubble which I used to house my commercial storefront that they had adopted a new policy on sensitive events like the Holocaust and had removed one of my works. I thought at first that they had removed my image of The Portuguese Synagogue in Amsterdam. It turns out while I have used that image a few times on this blog I had never uploaded it to the commercial site.

They chose to remove this image taken inside the Anne Frank house in Amsterdam. It’s not a high quality image. It was taken quickly with a 2 megapixel Canon Camera in 1999. I was still shooting film back then and didn’t take out my gear inside the Anne Frank Museum.

I like it because it was the window she used to stare out of and there are children going to school outside. It made me empathetic with how she must have felt. I appreciate RedBubble’s heightened sense of responsibility because of rising anti semitism in the world but believe they overreached in this case. Please let me know what you think!

The Girl in The Blue Dress

I published the full color version of this image in 2008 entitled Graffiti and The Girl. In looking back I realized that the image suffered from too much color and too much clutter.

I decided to edit the vision and after cropping to remove some of the clutter, I did some masking and selective color. I think the result is stunning.

Köln Fall Foliage

This autumn we will be returning to Europe. Our last visit was during the autumn of 2016. This time we will be in Spain and Italy and I am sure we will not see any colorful fall foliage there. I remembered being disappointed in seeing little dramatic foliage during our last trip through Germany and Austria.

Looking through the files I think I was mistaken. These were taken in Köln (Cologne) Germany during that trip.

Hamming it Up

You can buy excellent prosciutto aka Parma Ham in the USA. Every good Italian food store and deli will offer a variety. They are always in delicatessen cases. Most USA Italian restaurants offer a variety of dishes offering this delicacy.

The restaurants that we visited in Italy didn’t hide it away. It was almost presented like a lead actor in a play. If a dish require Parma Ham a waiter or chef would go to the center of the room where this beauty was displayed and with a very sharp knife cut what they needed. Food and entertainment.

Color Guard

I published the full color version of this picture earlier this week in Changing of The Guard. I thought the guard got lost in the image so I did a little bit of editing to make him stand out.

Saint Vitus Cathedral Prague

Saint Vitus Cathedral in Prague Czech Republic is a very important Cathedral in Roman Catholicism. It is located within the Prague Castle Complex which is a collection of ancient buildings dating back to the tenth century. At the time Prague was the seat of The Holy Roman Empire.

It is a be example of Romanesque architecture with awe inspiring stained glass and statues inside and outside the Cathedral.

Changing of The Guard

I am not a big fan of the military and soliders. I appreciate the sacrifices they make but I am not very knowledgable or interested in military things. That said I love the pomp and circumstance of the changing of the guard. I have seen it at the Tomb of The Unknown Solider and more recently at Prague Castle.

Prague Castle is the current seat of government for the Czech Republic and has been the seat of emperors and kings dating back to 9th century. The ceremony is therefore guarded by active soliders in addition to the ceremonial guard.
