Elm Beach at Sunrise
Our house in the Pocono Mountains backs up to the Maple Swamp. I thought this sounded kind of bad when we moved there but this is a northern mountains swamp at an elevation of 1,600 feet not a lowland swamp. It doesn’t have quicksand and leeches that you may find in the south. Our swamps have hardwood trees, foxes,coyotes and bears and in the spring and autumn show the rainbow of colors that is our seasonal change.

Pocono Wetlands
I think September and October are two of the best months for living in the Pocono Mountains. The weather is near perfect, the summer crazies have gone home and it’s too early for most hunters and skiers. The pace settles down, the air is crisp and mild and the colors are beautiful. This is a small lake about two miles from my house in Hemlock Farms. You can purchase a print of this and see other images and apparel at my commercial site.

As the time of year switches from Summer to Fall our mood seems to switch also. I have already seen my first Christmas ad and it is technically still Summer! People are planning their Halloween costumes and parties. Maybe the key to being a happier society is to live in the present! Summer Moon
Walking through the Pocono Mountains along rural lanes and paths is always improved with a loyal companion at your side. This is Deuce taking the point on walk through the forest on a beautiful day like today, not too long ago. You can buy a print of this image on my gallery by clicking here.

There are a number of ways to find my house in the Pocono Mountains but the most scenic way is to cross the wooden bridge over the Delaware at Dingman’s Ferry. This bridge is relatively unchanged for over 112 years. It is picturesque and the speed limit is 15 MPH (strictly enforced) but worth the trip. Actual people collect the $1 toll. Wetlands is the new politically correct word for a swamp. Just sounds better doesn’t it? Wetlands in Pennsylvania are homes to bears, snakes and migratory birds and a valuable water source. Pennsylvania Wetlands
It is fall in the Pocono Mountains and the leaves are falling down creating splashes of color everywhere. While the autumn is beautiful, the leaves can create a huge mess. Sometimes there are a lot of wet leaves on a mountain road and they are easy to skid on or slip on while walking. Hopefully it doesn’t snow too early because a heavy snowfall on top of leaves equals one colossal cluster ____. However it is all worth it to see the crown of natures beauty. Falling Leaves
I was out taking pictures of fall foliage and saw the reflections of the trees in the pond. I thought about Monet and wanted to do something that was homage to his style. The first image I took had extreme depth of field and the leaves in the pond were as sharp as the rocks. The result was a pretty but cluttered image and not at all Monet like. I then experimented with depth of field but to no avail. I could get the leaf reflection to be less sharp but then some of the rocks and the background would be unsharp and destroy the eye-flow. So I used mother nature and waited for the wind. I used f-32 and a slow shutter speed so the reflections become blurred through movement. Maybe not as good as Monet but a worthy salute anyhow. Blowing in the Wind
Around the corner from my house is this little pond that is part of the Maple Swamp. Swamp in the Pocono Mountains means something different than it does in the South or near the equator. Sure we have the occasional Black Bear and you have to watch out for a rare copperhead but there are no large snakes and alligators.This is my neighborhood in the fall, you can buy a print at my commercial gallery by clicking here.
