Our Pittsburgh Garden–Bleeding Heart

The first year we returned to Pittsburgh we planted Bleeding Heart. It has always been a favorited of ours. In our mountain garden we had a ugh specimen. It reminds me of an upside down version of the wild flower Dutchmen’s Britches. This one has grown significantly in three years and is now the size of a small shrubbery.

Azalea Time in Pittsburgh

Spring came late to Pittsburgh this year. When you travel through Pittsburg the first sign of Spring are the blooming forsythia bushes. That happened weeks ago. You know when Spring is really here when you see the bright splashes of color from blooming azaleas.

As i walked my dog through Regent Square the least couple of weeks I noticed azaleas loaded with buds but not a single bloom. Then this weekend, boom Azaleas everywhere. Spring is officially here. Carry on.

The Squirrels of Quintana Roo

During our second walk through the Jungle on this Mexican Odyssey my wife noted that we had never seen a squirrel in the Yucatan. I think she is right although I am no expert. What you do see, almost as much as you would see squirrels, are Iguanas

They are not nearly as annoying. They don’t run around like crazy irritating every dog on the planet. They don’t throw crap at you when you are setting up a tent. They have mystique because thanks to Ray Harryhausen we think of them as dinosaurs and for some reason we all love dinosaurs.

Tulum Wildflowers

These could be weeds for all I know but I found the colors to be striking especially against the rocks of ancient ruins. The ruins are in Tulum Mexico in the state of Quintanna Roo. I love visiting Mayan ruins in Mexico, it brings out my inner Indiana Jones.

Mayan Dragon

The Mayan Museum in Cancún Mexico is divided in to two parts. There is an archaeological site with jungle ruins and some simulations of Mayan life. The interior of the museum has exhibits of Mayan culture and examples of artwork and crafts.

This colorful dragon was situated on the ground floor near the entrance to the ruins.

Didn’t Make the Cut #2—Sunday In the Park

Working with a curator means that not all the images submitted will be used. Galleries can only hold so many pieces so some of my images didn’t make the cut for the Moment and Souls Exhibition. This one is entitled Sunday in the Park and was taken in 2009 at Luxembourg Palace in Paris France

You can purchase a framed image of this piece at my Commercial Gallery.

Sunnylands Center and Gardens

The estate originally built by Walter Annenberg in 1966 was used as a winter residence by the ambassador and his wife. Sunnylands Center has since been used by many famous people and where President Obama recently escaped for a few days after finishing his term.

The gardens are stunning and free to the public. Tickets can be purchased to tour The Residence when it is not in use.

Jardins du Château de Versailles

I have only been to Versailles once and it was a very full day. Of course we spent a lot of time touring the Château and the gardens immediately surrounding the Mansion. Then we went down a garden path and were in another world. Louis XIII’s purchased the lands around Versailles in the 1630s and formal gardens were laid out west of the château. The garden was expanded to its present size of 800 hectares (1800 acres) by Louis XIV in the 1660s.

The good thing about visiting Versailles is when we return we will not have to tour the Château and can take a picnic in the garden. You have to have a ticket to visit the château but the gardens are free to the people. I can’t wait to return. This is a statue in a small garden pond.

Pocono Lily

Lilies are the crown jewels of our garden. When they bloom Summer is in full gear. Lilies remind me of warm weather, swimming pools, lakes and walks in the park. I think they might be my favorite except for tulips, daffodils…oh never mind, I don’t really have a favorite. They are just beautiful flowers.

Pink Orchid

Living in Florida this winter was filled with many shocks and surprises. For one, I didn’t expect to see orchids in full bloom. I figured they need the full warmth of summer to bloom but some apparently like the cooler weather.

My Tampa friend, Jerry grows many orchids and this pink one was ready for its close up.
