Changing Wetlands–Ed and Amy

Ten years ago when we moved here we came across this spot in the game lands which we called “Ed and Amy”. On the rock in the center of the small wetland area it was inscribed Ed + Amy in white paint. We used to walk through there with our dogs and wondered who Ed and Amy were and if they were still together. We hadn’t been down that trail for years and a couple of weeks ago we hiked back down to Ed and Amy. The rock was still there but the paint all gone now after ten Pennsylvania winters. The stream still runs through there but entropy at work has removed Ed and Amy from these wetlands.

Prelude to a Kiss

This photograph was taken in Como Italy a couple of years ago. It was the trigger that has caused me to look for images like this ever since to create a book of people kissing in public places. There is that moment, before two people kiss when you commit to the fact that it is inevitable. This is one of those moments.

Henri Cartier-Bresson created the concept of the the decisive moment. To capture such a moment is the essence of Photojournalism. I like to think that he would have appreciated this image. You can buy a print of this image at my commercial gallery by clicking here.

I used this image as the cover of my first book Stop the World!. One of my ex photography students said it made her feel voyeuristic to see this. I took that as a compliment. I believe Henri Cartier-Bresson would like this image after all it was a decisive moment.

Summer Sunday in Paris

Paris is like any other major city, things slow down on Sunday. In the summer people have a lot of Parks to choose from in Paris. Parc Monceau,Jardin des Tuileries and Jardin du Palais Royal are some of the better known spots. However, my favorite is the Jardin du Luxembourg adjacent to Luxembourg Palace which is the center of the French Government. It is very large with many different spaces and you can see lovers kissing, joggers jogging and some of the most beautiful gardens in the world. This image sums up Sunday in Paris to me. The Old Fashion Way

I have published a few images that were created with “old school” image manipulation. My most popular is an old award winner called Row for Your Life. I studied the technique of Jerry Uelsmann and after a number of failures made these in my darkroom using the dodging and burning techniques perfected by Uelsmann. This one was printed during the same period and I scanned an old somewhat faded print to create the digital image. The pelican was shot in Lake Worth Florida, the beach is Cape Hatteras.

Summer Fun

Labor Day weekend usually signifies the end of Summer. Once again, the kids are back in school and traffic and schedules for everyone become more rigid because of it. Even if you don’t have children, you don’t want to get caught behind “the late bus” climbing up the mountain on a two lane road. So here is a video highlighting some fun we had this Summer. It is not unusual to see street musicians in the summer in any USA city. That is especially true for New York City and Central Park. It is also interesting to see how different musicians create changes in crowd behavior. A string quartet will cause people to sit or gather and quietly listen for a while. A folk singer may cause people to slow down or run away depending on the song and quality. Drummers though make people behave. People tend to walk quickly and in step to the beat. If I was the New York City Parks Commissioners I would pay these guys a fee to be near the most congested areas to keep the crowds moving. These guys were great and well worth a buck. A Passing Moment

To be a good photographer you must give yourself permission to observe the world around you. In my world this includes people which means you have to give yourself permission to be a little bit of a voyeur. Some can’t do that and limit their work to flowers or vistas and there is nothing wrong with that. Being a photographer is about setting limits. One friend looked at my work for “Just a Kiss” and said that I was shameless and really had big cohones. This made me glow, what a compliment for a street photographer. Chicago Mounties?

I never did get an answer as to who are these people? I took this picture years ago near Michigan Ave and the Water Tower. I have never seen them since. I don’t think they are mounted police and there wasn’t anything special going on in the city when we were there for the Print Show at McCormick place. We met this guy on the road in California years ago on our way to Las Vegas. He spent his time following different bands around the country and was at a rest stop going to a Moe concert. I always wondered about people who basically spent their lives doing this. Do they work? How to they afford to have this lifestyle? In any case his camper van did not have room for another sticker.
