Central Park Sunday

Great cities have great parks. Of course New Yorkers will insist that Central Park is “the best” in the world and maybe it is. New Yorkers also say it is the largest city park but it’s not even the largest in the United States. It is special however and it’s central location makes it very accessible to people living in Manhattan and of course, tourists. The human tapestry is just as much fun as the natural setting. Hey New York, Get Some Fish!

Last Sunday in New York City was beautiful. Perfect weather, hard bodies running, families a strolling and dogs a playing provided a perfect human tapestry of relaxed summer fun. Well, perfect until you got to the lakes. In some areas where people were rowing boats the water was green,OK green but STILL water, I don’t know what this is. This is the end of one pond near Belvedere Castle. This photo is not augmented at all and is actually the way it looked. Boat rental anyone? Yes they were lined up to rent a boat to row through this muck. I have heard that the more catfish you have the less algae you have. Everyone who has ever had an aquarium knows this. As a journalist on a movie set you have a license to observe and report. What I found interesting was the mood swings that are cause by events. In this image, the Director, George Romero and Director of Photography (DP) Michael Gornick were trying to figure out how to deal with the reflections from the fountain. The two shots were taken seconds apart on the set of Dawn of the Dead at Monroeville Mall in 1978.. You can buy a print of this image at my commercial gallery by clicking here.

Time for a Beer?

People will argue about anything. One of the most frequent arguments you hear in taverns and bars is which beer is the best. This argument is specious at its core. It is like saying which food is best. In summer one may choose a lighter beer and on Saint Patrick’s Day, anything but Harp or Guinness is just not proper in my opinion. However, it is also in my opinion that the best beer in the world comes from Belgium. With over 2000 beer brands you have a world of choice in Belgium. When you walk across the Clemente Bridge in Pittsburgh to go to PNC Park it is closed to traffic during baseball games. When I went to see the Pirates play in Pittsburgh, I only had my 50mm- 300mm zoom lens so I was unable to take the “definitive scenic shot” of PNC park. I did get a few shots that provide a little bit of the feel of being in this wonderful baseball park. I grew up with Forbes Field and hated it when the Pirates didn’t have their own field and had to share with the Steelers. This ballpark provides the same kind of feel that Forbes Field except of course with more modern conveniences and better food. See more images and buy prints and apparel at my commercial site.

When I took this picture I was focusing on the action at second base. Only during post production did I notice the bubble being blown by the center fielder. At first I thought there were two balls in the frame. Imagine if the ball was coming to the outfielder and the bubble exploded in his face as he was making the catch. Don’t Wanna Discuss it!

I said earlier this week that a Photographer had to give themselves permission to observe people. My wife said this shot was intruding and, yes it is but it honestly captures a moment of human expression. As a photojournalist your image should capture a decisive moment, a human expression or a moment of action. That is the way Henri Cartier Bresson teaches and who can argue with that?
