The beaches near Tulum and shielded by a barrier reef. The Caribbean waves here are gentle and perfect for snorkeling, swimming, sand castles and when the tide is out, a beach bike ride, with a friend.

Tulum Panorama

Last year I published some images from Tulum. Tulum is the last Mayan city constructed before the Spanish invasion and conquest of Mexico. It was constructed on the east coast of the Yucatán Peninsula on the Caribbean Sea in what is now the Mexican state of Quintana Roo.

The city was constructed along the cliffs overlooking the Caribbean and served as a port for other Mayan cities like Coba which was the de facto capital of the Mayan Empire. The ruins are fun to visit because afterwards you can swim in the mild Caribbean waters sheltered by a large reef providing gentle waves and pure white sand. It is not as large a site as Chicha Itsa but maybe more beautiful because of the sea.

Two Church Village

The Rhine River cruise was too interesting to be boring. However, after a while the villages became predictable. There was a dock, a town hall, a small square and a Church. This town must have been special because there were two churches along the river.

Water Towers

We began our sail from Amsterdam in the Netherlands and stood on our veranda watching the Nederlands sweep by. Eight days and 7 ports later we would wind up in Basil Switzerland. Along the Waal river in Holland we saw a few buildings that look like castles. Closer looks reveal they are not. This is a water tower or pumping station. We also saw bridge abutments designed to look like castles.

Amsterdam View from Central Station

This is a view of Amsterdam catching the afternoon sun in October. It is taken from the left side of Central station at the foot of the bridge.

At The Beach

I am having knee surgery next week. They will undoubtedly take my blood pressure. The way I relax for a blood pressure reading is to think of this place. It doesn’t matter to me where the beach is. I just think of this scene and listen to the waves.

This beach though is north of Tulum in Quintanna Roo on the Mayan Riviera.

Mexican Beauty

Street performers in Mexico are a whole lot different than in the United States or other countries. Most wear exotic costumes and frequently have exotic pets like large snakes or or lizards with them. This group was seen performing outside the entrance to Tulum in Quintana Roo.

Marksburg Castle Revisited

Last year I published an article on Marksburg Castle. Here are some additional views of the castle not in the original post.

Along the Rhine River is a stretch known as the Rhine Gorge which is a UNESCO world heritage site. Forty castles line both sides of this section of the river. Marksburg is the only castle that was never destroyed and sits above the town of Braubach. The fortress was used for protection rather than a residence for royal families.

Boppard Hamm Rhineland

The Boppard Hamm wine region is one of the largest in Europe. It lies between Boppard and Spay in the Upper Middle Rhine Valley in Germany. This section of the Rhine River is known as The Rhine Gorge and has been a World Cultural Heritage of UNESCO since 2002.

The river does a bend here and shields the damp west wind creating a great climate for growing grapes. As our ship cruises though the river bends you can see miles of fields like this and people picking grapes by hand.
