The Phipps Conservatory of Pittsburgh

I think the best time of year to visit a conservatory is in the dead of Winter. It’s warm and humid inside and loaded with the scent of fresh flowers and orchids in bloom. In Pittsburgh we have one of the best conservatories in the world. The Phipps Conservatory has fourteen different green house rooms connected with walkways. Waterfalls, glass sculptures and benches are scattered throughout and volunteers and employees are there to answer your questions while they maintain the beauty of the environment.

The Bonsai room has some spectacular specimens that have been in training since the 1950’s and the new education center is one of the most advanced green buildings in the United States. All the environments are computer controlled and react to wind, humidity and temperature providing a perfect environment for the flora.

Summer Garden at Carnegie Music Hall

A beautiful summer garden in full bloom outside the Carnegie Music Hall in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania. I used to be an usher at The Music Hall and remember sneaking into the Museum at night. There was some sort of excitement to see the giant dinosaurs in the dim night light and staying one step ahead of the roving guards.

Pocono Lily

Lilies are the crown jewels of our garden. When they bloom Summer is in full gear. Lilies remind me of warm weather, swimming pools, lakes and walks in the park. I think they might be my favorite except for tulips, daffodils…oh never mind, I don’t really have a favorite. They are just beautiful flowers.

Datura Blossoms

Datura is a plant that grows in warm climates and is also known as “angel’s trumpets” and “moonflower”. It has long been known to have hallucinogenic properties and commonly used by Yaqui and other Native American tribes in rituals. I have a friend who is an emergency room doctor and she talks about all the kids that come to the ER because they have ingested Datura or part of the plant. The blooms however are beautiful but you need to be careful if you have dogs or other pets if you have this plant in your garden.

On the Road to Hana

Driving the Hana Highway is a once in the lifetime experience, well at least I won’t do it again. I hate driving close to the edge of narrow roads without guard rails but fortunately my wife doesn’t and we got to take this wonderful drive. If you stop to look at every waterfall along the way it will take you all day. If I were to drive it again, I would definitely get a hotel or Inn and not drive back until the next day. Maui has two great drives in addition to this one. The scenic road to Haleakala and Route 340 on the West side which is my personal favorite.

Summer Sunday in Paris

Paris is like any other major city, things slow down on Sunday. In the summer people have a lot of Parks to choose from in Paris. Parc Monceau,Jardin des Tuileries and Jardin du Palais Royal are some of the better known spots. However, my favorite is the Jardin du Luxembourg adjacent to Luxembourg Palace which is the center of the French Government. It is very large with many different spaces and you can see lovers kissing, joggers jogging and some of the most beautiful gardens in the world. This image sums up Sunday in Paris to me. Wild Daisy

We love gardening, especially my wife who is a persistent weeder. However, we both also like finding wildflowers. We are lucky in Pennsylvania where we have many varieties of rudbeckia, day lilies and cosmos that bloom in the woods, along the streams and besides the highways. These wild daisies were growing near the banks of the Delaware river in the woods and spot lit by the summer sun. To see more images and buy prints and apparel, please visit my commercial gallery.

Summer Fun

Labor Day weekend usually signifies the end of Summer. Once again, the kids are back in school and traffic and schedules for everyone become more rigid because of it. Even if you don’t have children, you don’t want to get caught behind “the late bus” climbing up the mountain on a two lane road. So here is a video highlighting some fun we had this Summer. Early Tulips

Spring happens later in the mountains. At 1700 feet above sea level, tulips don’t really bloom until Mothers Day. These are the first tulips of the year in our pocono mountain garden. See other images of spring and buy prints at my commercial gallery.
