Summer Sunday in Paris

Paris is like any other major city, things slow down on Sunday. In the summer people have a lot of Parks to choose from in Paris. Parc Monceau,Jardin des Tuileries and Jardin du Palais Royal are some of the better known spots. However, my favorite is the Jardin du Luxembourg adjacent to Luxembourg Palace which is the center of the French Government. It is very large with many different spaces and you can see lovers kissing, joggers jogging and some of the most beautiful gardens in the world. This image sums up Sunday in Paris to me. Spooky Eyes

Every time I visit the Louvre, I try to see new parts of the Museum. I still haven’t seen it all in my three visits and probably never will…it’s just too big. The last time we found a new sculpture room and some work we had never see. I don’t know who the artist was but I swear the eyes of this statue follow you as you go through the gallery. I walked by it a couple of times and it made me feel kind of creepy like this guy was watching me.

Modern Art

I have a love/hate relationship with “modern art”. One complaint is a clear definition of what constitutes “Modern Art”. I sure in some University a professor thinks they can clearly explain it and maybe they can, just not to me. When we visited The Pompidou Centre in Paris I was amazed and also put in hysterics by some of the displays.

There was one salon that had a small wall with five pieces on it.There were five ostentatious gold painted frames of different sizes arranged in a standard gallery pattern. Each frame had an oil painting of solid black paint…nothing else solid black, thick old black oil paint. I was laughing so hard I had to exit the salon, tears were streaming down my face. But then there were some amazing works also displayed like those below. The building is incredible and even the elevator is a work of art.

The Centre Pompidou is a modern art museum in Paris that is truly one of the best in the world. Modern art both astounds me and makes me laugh. I saw this work at the Centre Pompidou that was a string of plain white Christmas lights haphazardly put on the wall with a little card that said “Untitled” and the name of the artist. It made me laugh so hard I had to leave the area. This is a view of Paris from the roof of the Centre Pompidou.

Model Snapshots

Earlier this week I posted a portrait My Favorite Model, who just happens to be my wife of 42 years so I have taken a lot of pictures of her in the different stages of her life. Here are a couple of snapshots from the old days. She still has the ability to look through the lens rather than at the lens so at some point I will have to do a retrospective of her look through five decades.These images are not for sale.

The Old Fashion Way

I have published a few images that were created with “old school” image manipulation. My most popular is an old award winner called Row for Your Life. I studied the technique of Jerry Uelsmann and after a number of failures made these in my darkroom using the dodging and burning techniques perfected by Uelsmann. This one was printed during the same period and I scanned an old somewhat faded print to create the digital image. The pelican was shot in Lake Worth Florida, the beach is Cape Hatteras.

My Favorite Model

I have published a number of images of fashion models that I worked for back in the day however have never posted any images of my favorite model. My wife, now of 42 years was always my best model. She had the ability to look through the lens rather than at the lens. Most good models have this skill but most of them are professionals and she was not but she did have the skill and appearance to pursue that career had she wanted to. In any case, this is a portrait I took of her in 1977 and it is still one of my favorites. This image is not for sale.

Pat at the Train Station

When I first started to shoot portfolios for fashion models it mostly was done in the studio. Early on though, I was fortunate to meet a real pro and she wanted to go on location. It was an education. I have published another image for this shoot as All Aboard. I picked her up and she loaded clothes in the back of my car and told me to drive to this old deserted train station in Greensburg. She understood the “derelict” look decades ahead of Zoolander This is another image from that day long ago.

Morning Gull

Atlantic City is fun at dawn. Most people are sleeping or still desperately gambling. You may see a runner or bike rider or someone out for a walk, but even in Summer the beach and boardwalk are relatively deserted. The morning is reserved for fisherman and gulls and an ocassional photographer like myself.
