Tonight the Pittsburgh Steelers will play their arch rival Baltimore Ravens at Heinz Field missing their ace who was seriously injured last week. Real Steeler fans call the Ravens the “Old Browns” because former Browns owner Art Model deserted Cleveland and moved his team to Baltimore. He was kind of like the Lebron James of his time. He was not allowed to keep the old franchise name because of the way he “stiffed” the city of Cleveland and a new team was finally installed in that city. Browns fans insist that they have a rivalry with Pittsburgh, but real Steelers fans know it is the Ravens and not the Browns we really hate. You can’t blame Baltimore, hell their owner literally moved the Colts out of town in the middle of the night leaving that city without a team for years. La Grande Arche de Ugly

Paris is a city of superb architectural structures both ancient and modern. When the Eiffel Tower was first constructed it was supposed to temporary and at first Parisians hated it, but learned to love it as one of the symbols of their great city. However, personally I don’t think I could ever learn to love La Grande Arche de la Défense. In my opinion, it is a monstrosity. I appreciate its functionality as an office structure but just don’t think it fits in a city of such magnificent architecture. You can see more images from my european collection by clicking here.

The Taste Buds

Penn State University had a fraternity fund raiser called the Phi Si 500. It was a race, where runners had to run a mile and stop and drink a beer at a number of bars along the way. They would frequently do so in costume. This is Bud Man leading the Taste Buds to the next bar in State College PA during the 1980’s. The University and the City finally agreed to prohibit the race and the Fraternity created a more standard fun raising event. You can purchase a copy of this print by clicking here.

Americans have some dates burned in their memory. September 11 and December 6 are two notorious dates where Americans were attacked, killed and suffered extreme hardships. It is important as Americans to remember these dates and honor the fallen. However, as citizens of the world we MUST remember today as well because it is the 74th anniversary of Kristallnacht. Tonight were the first attacks on Jewish homes in Germany. At least 91 Jews were killed in the attacks, and a further 30,000 arrested and incarcerated in concentration camps. Jewish homes, hospitals, and schools were ransacked, over 1,000 synagogues were burned and Jewish businesses destroyed or damaged. Millions of others experienced death and torture by the lunatic Hitler. We must never forget and always honor this day. Things are much better in Europe now for Jewish people that have remained or returned over all these years. However, last year when visiting Italy I saw it was still necessary for soldiers to guard the synagogue in Milan and heavy fences kept out even curious tourists like myself.

Chris Wood on the Hofner

Chris Wood plays a lot of instruments but outside of Paul McCarthy you don’t see too many professional bass guitar players playing the Hofner bass guitar which has its own unique sound. This photo was taken recently at the Medeski, Martin and Wood concert at the Sherman Theatre in Stroudsburg Pennsylvania. I have seen most of the great bass players in concert (Clarke,Woonton,etc)and Wood is a member of that class. You can purchase a print of this image by clicking here.

Winter is Coming!

I am not talking about Game of Thrones or Winterfell either. All signs here point to a mild winter. The caterpillars are not too wooly and there are tons of acorns on the ground. Somehow, I feel that we will get more snow than last year which, is not saying much because last winter never happened. Won’t be too long though until sources like this will become common. Opuntia, also known as nopales or paddle cactus is a plant native to the southwestern USA. They are fairly easy to grow at home if you have the right lighting conditions. Ace Revisited

Back in the day, I had a Dog named Ace. We were told he was a toy collie, when he was one year old he weighed ninety pounds. Ace had a knack for being in the way. In this shot I was shooting a model in a fur jacket on a piano bench with a 6 x7 CM camera which had pretty high resolution. This was the bottom half of one of the shots. Last week my lovely bride of 41 years took a fall and got a fracture in her shoulder. She is in a sling for four to six weeks and it is a royal pain in the ass for her and a little for me. Anyhow. my daughter lives in Chicago with her great boyfriend and his parents sent my wife these flowers. They are good people, we have dined with them and visited their house and really like the whole family, but hell even I didn’t get my wife flowers! I was looking through old concert images to see if I there were still some undiscovered gems and I came across this one. Not at all a good photo but as I looked at it I thought how different arena shows are today. This is at the Pittsburgh Civic Arena in 1973. Anybody could just walk up on stage and at this show and someone did during the set break. He went to the microphone and spoke real acid gibberish as security gently escorted him away. Today the stage would be much higher and barricaded and have a line of security people in front of the stage. This is why I like to go to small venues today and tend to avoid arena shows.
