Zombie Nights is my story of the two nights I spent with the living dead. This brilliant cover design was created by Peter Johnson from The United Kingdom.

En Bruges

I have never been to Venice where some people say the canals are beautiful and others say they smell like garbage or death. I have been to Amsterdam which is a beautiful city and loaded with wonderful canals which are actually part of the city’s flood control system. I have heard the canals are full of abandoned bicycles but can vouch they don’t smell of death or garbage.

Then there is Bruges which is sometimes called the Venice of the North. A magnificent ancient city with a wonderful network of canals. I have been there a number of times and each time I am struck again with the beauty of the ancient town and the cleanliness and blue waters of the canals. Everyone should visit at least once and if you can’t make the trip then at least watch the wonderful movie En Bruges and you will see what you are missing.

Black Dog

We were exploring a small town in Provence in the mountains near Saint Tropez. I kept constantly losing my family because it seemed that every twist and turn of the narrow streets held some photographic wonder. I stopped to photograph this small green door wondering what was behind it when this black dog tentatively peeked around the corner. I have never met a dog that frightened me but thought it was time to catch up with my family. The dog was French after all and probably hated tourists, especially ones with cameras.

Before The Sun Rises

Sometimes the best views at sunrise are before the sun actually rises. This was shot right before a sunrise in Atlantic City. The beach at Atlantic City for a long time has been considered one of the best beaches on the East Coast. I remember going there as a teen and was just amazed at how wide the beach was and the fine white texture of the sand.

The city has gone through a lot of changes since my youth. However, the beach has been a constant and now thanks to conservationists will continue to be so. After Hurricane Sandy they planted all these beach grasses. These will help to hold the dunes in place and protect the beach from erosion. Way to go New Jersey!

Neighbors that Rock

In our life we have had some good luck with creative neighbors. In Montclair we lived next door to Janet Aldrich who was a musical comedy actress with a great voice. She actually borrowed our dog for a one month run in Anything Goes. Janet Shaw lived across the street. She was a set designer for many Woody Allen movies and when we knew her she worked on The Sopranos.

When we moved back to Pittsburgh we were excited to meet our new neighbors. We recently discovered that our neighbor across the street, Matt Aquiline was not only a musician but also a songwriter. I have always been fascinated by song writers. As a novelist I have enough problems just writing words let alone music to go with the words. To me music is a separate language and writing a song is like writing a poem in two different languages at the same time! We found out that he was performing at The Hard Rock Pittsburgh last night with his longtime singing partner Belen Pifel. It was a wonderful concert. His songs are filled with wit and passion and the harmonies were terrific. I have posted a couple of snaps from the show.

Magic Mirror

Milan is known for lots of things; fashion, parks, commerce, opera and great food. However, Milan is not known for its canals. Nor should it be. We found out that Milan had a canal only by reading the small print in a tour book. The canal is small and lined on one side with antique shops and clothing stores and on the other with restaurants and clubs.

In December of 2013 I published Canali di Milano which includes a scenic picture of the canal. This image of a mirror along the canal has long held my interest.

A Night at The Ballpark

This year we have been to 5 Pittsburgh Pirates games and one Steelers game and the two experiences couldn’t be more different. Of course we can afford to have seats on the 100 level for the Bucs and for the Steelers we were in the 500’s near the end zone. At the Bucs game you feel you are out for a night with friends you don’t know. All age groups are represented and yes there are a few drunks and occasionally you may here a swear word.

The NFL game is totally different. People have been drinking and tailgating for hours. There are no children. There are a lot of very large men. Even the language is different. Even the restrooms are different. You feel kind of on edge at all times. Women can’t have purses or fanny packs and are forced to carry their stuff in clear plastic bags they sell outside the gates. Photographers can’t have telephoto lenses and being profane and drunk seems to be a requirement. We are going to see another Steelers game in October and we will be better prepared. My wife has her plastic bag and I will not be carrying a camera and hell yah I will swear damn it!

From last nights game at PNC Park Cubs v Pirates. Note the bartenders at McFadden’s before the game move so fast they actually blur in photos!

Rainbow Optional

If I win the lottery this is where I would live. This was for sale last time I was in Maui and it is nestled directly on Kaanapali Beach on the walkway between Whalers Village and the Hilton Hotel. They were asking $1.1 million at the time and yes it did have a pool secluded in the back. Rainbow is optional but usually available.

Bambi Lives!

I took this picture of a fawn in 2002 at the end of our first summer living on the mountain. People that lived there full time like us said wait a year and you will start to think of them as vermin. It never quite got to that level for me because the next year our community voted for a deer cull in a heated political battle between the “full timers” and “weekenders”. The herd grew at a rapid rate in our community because no hunting was allowed. Deer are not dumb and they began to migrate into our community. DCNR noticed that some deer had wasting disease and fawns that were born were small and struggled to survive. The amount of deer/auto accidents increased dramatically.

The size of the herd was unhealthy according to DCNR and our local environmental experts. After the first two years of deer culls the herd reduced to a more normal size. We began to see fawns again and the herd was restored to health. This deer has all but lost the markings fo a fawn as it munched in my back yard waiting for its first summer to end.

Fourteen Years Ago

Today is a day Americans will never forget. We all remember just where we were and what we were doing on 9/11/2001. The skyline of one of our key cities was attacked and changed forever. Thousands died, heroes were born. It was the first time the mainland of the United States was attacked since 1812 and it scarred our national psyche.

As a people we have become angrier and more scared than ever before. Our journalists and politicians seem to want to keep us afraid and market fear to us every day. When you visit New York today you see a new tower climbing out of the ashes to once again dominate the skyline.

This image is a look back to what the city looked like before the day of terror. It will never look that way again but with the new tower the city looks more complete and who knows what the future will bring. The new skyline is a monument to perseverance and grit and I hope it will help heal us as a country.
