The Village of Biot

Biot is a medieval village in the hills of Provence between Antibes and Nice. It is what you would expect of a Village in Provence. Narrow ancient streets, historic ruins and great little cafes and restaurants. What makes Biot unusual is the ancient glass works that have been there for centuries. You can visit the glass works and see today’s craftsmen blow glass works of art in the same way they have done for centuries. You can also spend as much money as you want in the shop. Of course even the town street map is made from ceramic glass.

Summer Sunday in Paris

Paris is like any other major city, things slow down on Sunday. In the summer people have a lot of Parks to choose from in Paris. Parc Monceau,Jardin des Tuileries and Jardin du Palais Royal are some of the better known spots. However, my favorite is the Jardin du Luxembourg adjacent to Luxembourg Palace which is the center of the French Government. It is very large with many different spaces and you can see lovers kissing, joggers jogging and some of the most beautiful gardens in the world. This image sums up Sunday in Paris to me. Spooky Eyes

Every time I visit the Louvre, I try to see new parts of the Museum. I still haven’t seen it all in my three visits and probably never will…it’s just too big. The last time we found a new sculpture room and some work we had never see. I don’t know who the artist was but I swear the eyes of this statue follow you as you go through the gallery. I walked by it a couple of times and it made me feel kind of creepy like this guy was watching me.

Modern Art

I have a love/hate relationship with “modern art”. One complaint is a clear definition of what constitutes “Modern Art”. I sure in some University a professor thinks they can clearly explain it and maybe they can, just not to me. When we visited The Pompidou Centre in Paris I was amazed and also put in hysterics by some of the displays.

There was one salon that had a small wall with five pieces on it.There were five ostentatious gold painted frames of different sizes arranged in a standard gallery pattern. Each frame had an oil painting of solid black paint…nothing else solid black, thick old black oil paint. I was laughing so hard I had to exit the salon, tears were streaming down my face. But then there were some amazing works also displayed like those below. The building is incredible and even the elevator is a work of art.

View from the Centre Pompidou

The Centre Pompidou is a modern art museum in Paris that is truly one of the best in the world. Modern art both astounds me and makes me laugh. I saw this work at the Centre Pompidou that was a string of plain white Christmas lights haphazardly put on the wall with a little card that said “Untitled” and the name of the artist. It made me laugh so hard I had to leave the area. This is a view of Paris from the roof of the Centre Pompidou.

Monet’s Garden at Giverny

It was difficult taking pictures in Giverny. There were a lot of people and the garden had a lot of shade. I was without a tripod and it was challenging to get the correct depth of field. This plant had some light on it making it one of the “keepers” from the shoot. I am assuming this plant is holly?

Monet’s water garden in Giverny is located just outside of Vernon France. It is a short day trip from Paris and worth the train and bus ride. The house and gardens are unique and stunning and kept in the same way that they were during the time of Claude Monet. If you have the time it is worth spending a night since the entire area is really a tribute to nature and art. You can see other images and buy prints and apparel at my commercial gallery.

The Kiss

I published the middle image from this series a couple of years ago and it is a candidate for my work in progress, “Just a Kiss”. However, yesterday while reviewing images I noticed the sequence for the first time. The three pictures were taken in sequence over one minute. In the first the young lady seems to want to have nothing to do with this guy, the image says no..no..NO! The middle is the kiss and the final image, well they both seemed to like it. Le Canard Confit

I have always been an adventurous eater. When I worked for Konica and visited Japan, I adopted Sushi and Sashimi as it were the food of my culture and became slightly obnoxious about making sure everyone loved it as well. When I worked for Agfa and began to visit Europe regularly I was always careful to order foods that I couldn’t easily get in the United States and one of those was Duck Confit. I always thought it meant Duck leg but not so. It referrers to the method of curing the duck and cooking it in its own fat.

I have found that it is not easy to do correctly and frequently it is greasy. In the USA, I will only order it the best French Restaurants. However in France or the Benelux countries even a small cafe like this one knows how to make it. You can see other images and buy prints or apparel on my commercial site.

Giverny Geraniums

Some people think that all flowers are created equally. I mean why should a tulip that is located in Holland be any better than a tulip in my garden? A geranium is a geranium right? Well maybe so but these geraniums were growing in Monet’s water garden in Giverny near Vernon France so to me, they are special not because of the flower but because of the background. This is not available for sale because I didn’t have a tripod and had to compromise on the exposure settings and this was hand held at ISO 400 f5.6 for 1/80th of a second.
