Panning Running Deer

Most still photographers don’t think about panning very much. Panning is commonly used in cinematography but in still photography will cause motion blur. Sometimes motion blur can make an image work by giving the illusion of motion. If you place the camera on a tripod and pan with the action during a slow shutter speed you can still create blurred motion but through panning make the subject blur less. This was shot at an exposure of 1 second and the camera was panned with the action during exposure. The panning causes the background to blur but by panning with the action the deer are not blurred as much making them stand out. You can see more of my nature images at my gallery by clicking here

Place de Armes Montréal

Montreal is unmistakably a French City in the Canadian Province of Québec. You may forget that because most people speak English and the city is very cosmopolitan. If you speak English they will speak English and if you speak French they may have some trouble understanding you since their dialect is different than the French that is taught in USA schools. Although we are closer to Québec, we teach French in the way it is spoken in France. This is something I have never completely comprehended. This is the beautiful Place de Armes as taken from the steps of Notre Dame Cathedral (yes there is also a Notre Dame in Montréal). Trocadéro Plaza in Paris France

Millions of people visit the Eiffel Tower each year and going to the top is a rite of passage and offers one of the most famous view of Paris France. However, if you want to SEE the Eiffel Tower don’t cross the river. It is so large that the best place to view the tower is across the river on the famous Trocadéro Plaza. It is also a great spot to watch the sunset with the tower in front of the sun. Thousands come to the plaza each night just to see the sunset. If you get there early enough you can enjoy dinner from one of the many great cafes that offer views of the tower. You can buy a print of this image at my gallery by clicking here.

Monet’s Water Garden at Giverny

Outside of vernon France about an hour from Paris is Monet’s house at Giverny. I always had the feeling that Monet was near sighted and too vain to wear glasses which explained his unique style. However, after seeing his house and gardens at Giverny I changed my opinion. I think he painted what he saw. This photo has great depth of field and is in focus, yet it is “soft” in appearance due to the willow trees and other vegetation. You can buy a print of this image at my gallery by clicking here.

Sunday at the Park

Paris is like any other major city, things slow down on Sunday. In the summer people have a lot of Parks to choose from in Paris. Parc Monceau,Jardin des Tuileries and Jardin du Palais Royal are some of the better known spots. However, my favorite is the Jardin du Luxembourg adjacent to Luxembourg Palace which is the center of the French Government. It is very large with many different spaces and you can see lovers kissing, joggers jogging and some of the most beautiful gardens in the world. This image sums up Sunday in Paris to me. The Padlocks on the Seine In Paris

When we visited Paris last summer we knew that there was a tradition of people putting Padlocks on the bridge at Pont de l’Archevêché. Our travels did not take us over that bridge this time but we saw the that there were also locks on the bridge at Pont des Arts. You can read more about this in the David Lebovitz article on the subject called The Padlocks of Paris.. Basically lovers put a padlock on the bridge to celebrate their love. Officials seem to be letting people do this on these two bridges and I know next time we visit we will have a padlock with us. You can see more prints of Europe in my gallery by clicking here.

Scofield House–Sturgeon Bay

We had never really spent any time in Wisconsin so we left our daughter’s house in Chicago and headed north for a couple of days. We walked along the beach of Lake Michigan, chased seagulls, had a picnic lunch and headed north to Sturgeon Bay. This lovely little town is reminiscent of New England and for Chicagoans it is like their “Maine”. We stayed at a wonderful Bed and Breakfast, The Scofield House, which was filled with beautiful antique furniture and comfortable modern amenities. We were greeted with home made cookies and Breakfast was enough to last until dinner. We highly recommend it. See more scenic views on my commercial site by clicking here.

Mirror with a Canal View

A lot of tourists miss the canal area of Milan. There are a number of clubs in the area and it is close to some less desirable areas of the city. However, the canal is also lined with antique shops and charming cafes.
