Spinning on the Balls

The first enclosed shopping mall in the world is the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele in Milan Italy. It was designed and constructed by Giuseppe Mengoni and construction was finished in 1877. It is named after Vittorio Emanuele II, the first king of the Kingdom of Italy.It is adjacent to the Cathedral Santa Maria Nascente or as it is commonly called Duomo di Milano and many visitors may miss the Galleria while scurrying to the Cathedral. The galleria is a work of art and in its center there is a mosaic tile of a bull. The tradition is that if you spin on the balls of the bull, it will bring you luck. People line up to spin on the bull’s balls which no longer exist and have been replaced by a permanent hole in the mosaic. They try to fix it periodically, but the poor bull cannot survive this testicular abuse. You can purchase a print of this image and see others at my European gallery by clicking here.

Pétanque at Champs de Mars

Pétanque is French game that can be played anywhere. It is similar to the Italian game,Bocce but unlike the Bocce it does not require a fixed court. One player throws a small target ball and the p[layers try to get as close to it as possible without hitting it. These players at Champs de Mars are playing near the Eiffel Tower in Paris France. During downtime on the set of Dawn of The Dead (1978), George Romero would frequently sit down and review the script. Kind of like a Pitcher figuring out his next pitch. It was Romero’s attention to detail that makes this film a relevant classic nearly thirty five years after its release. Zappa Remembered

Five hundred years from now when music historians study the music of the twentieth century they will probably compare Zappa to Bach and Mozart of previous centuries. He was a consummate guitarist but more importantly an excellent composer. He composed “songs” but what sets him apart was his ability to compose complex music in the tradition of the old masters. “The Big Swifty” is an example of this which he played at the Syria Masque decades ago. Thanksgiving Break

Tomorrow we will ship up to Boston to enjoy Thanksgiving with my family and I will take a break from blogging. I can’t think of this holiday without thinking of my Daughter who was just one month old at her first Thanksgiving. This is an old picture of her, my Mom and my lovely wife in State College Pennsylvania twenty nine years ago. The turkey was bigger than she was. Have a great holiday!

Big Ben Down

Tonight the Pittsburgh Steelers will play their arch rival Baltimore Ravens at Heinz Field missing their ace who was seriously injured last week. Real Steeler fans call the Ravens the “Old Browns” because former Browns owner Art Model deserted Cleveland and moved his team to Baltimore. He was kind of like the Lebron James of his time. He was not allowed to keep the old franchise name because of the way he “stiffed” the city of Cleveland and a new team was finally installed in that city. Browns fans insist that they have a rivalry with Pittsburgh, but real Steelers fans know it is the Ravens and not the Browns we really hate. You can’t blame Baltimore, hell their owner literally moved the Colts out of town in the middle of the night leaving that city without a team for years. The loss of Big Ben will make it harder to win tonight, but real Steeler fans will keep the faith. You can buy a print of healthy Big Ben by clicking here.

The Taste Buds

Penn State University had a fraternity fund raiser called the Phi Si 500. It was a race, where runners had to run a mile and stop and drink a beer at a number of bars along the way. They would frequently do so in costume. This is Bud Man leading the Taste Buds to the next bar in State College PA during the 1980’s. The University and the City finally agreed to prohibit the race and the Fraternity created a more standard fun raising event. You can purchase a copy of this print by clicking here.

Chris Wood on the Hofner

Chris Wood plays a lot of instruments but outside of Paul McCarthy you don’t see too many professional bass guitar players playing the Hofner bass guitar which has its own unique sound. This photo was taken recently at the Medeski, Martin and Wood concert at the Sherman Theatre in Stroudsburg Pennsylvania. I have seen most of the great bass players in concert (Clarke,Woonton,etc)and Wood is a member of that class. You can purchase a print of this image by clicking here.
